Help, my partner has very kindly given me a 3300 turntable but when I have tried to connect it to a modern Marantz amp, (KI signature) there is very low volume output and massive hum. Is this something to do with the earthing or do I need to buy a pre-amp? If I need to buy a pre-amp, what do I need to look out for or has anyone had any experience at all?

What a lovely thing to receive!
I know that the Amp that went with the Beogram 3300 has a built in pre amp, so presume that the deck didn't.
If I'm wrong, someone will soon come round and correct me.

Andy is quite right - you need a RIAA pre-amp. In days gone by, amplifiers had a dedicated record player input which amplified the signal internally - most amplifiers these days do not have this so you need an external one. Prices vary from a few tens of pounds to thousands. A few tens will do!
