Hi all -

I was finally able to power up my Beomaster 2400, cx50 speakers and Beogram 1602 turntable.

The good news: everything appears to work.

The bad news: what's coming off the turntable sounds like hell.

I haven't done my basic due diligence yet - because the equipment is in my office in the bowels of a tv station, I haven't hooked up an fm antenna (reception is poor, as you'd expect) so I can't absolutely rule out the 2400 as the problem.

That said, I suspect the turntable. It sounds to me like I don't have the weighting set up properly, and the B & O directions aren't of much help.

The cartridge is marked 20EN, which shows a tracking weight required of one gram.

Can someone carefuly walk me thru' setup?

It is probably the cartridge. However get the weight right. There is a sliding scale on the arm. Set it to zero first and make sure that at that weight the arm just floats when set to play. If you have a stylus balance you can use it but most people do not have one. With the arm balance set to zero, set a record to play and as the arm release works, turn the power off to the record player at the main. You now have a free arm to play with. I would then try adding a tiny amount of weight and see if the arm descends. 0.1g to start with. If it goes down, the scale should be about right. If that works, set the weight to 1.5g (the 20EN is supposed to track at 1.2g ) and see what the sound is like. If still rubbish, you need a new cartridge! To check the radio reception of the 2400, just stick a small screwdriver in the centre of the co-axial aerial plug - you will be surprised just what good reception you will get! Clearly worth seeing that the receiver is OK.

On the 1602, (as I'm sure you know) the weight is in two sections - the smaller front part and the bigger rear.

When I set to 'zero,' do I hold the rear weight and turn the front, and then to set the weight turn the two together?

Or do I do the opposite?

And how do I read the scale on the front? The documentation says it's demarked in .1 gram increments. If that's the case, how do I set it to a gram or more?

Actually I had forgotten that the 1602 had the new 1700 type arm! The principle is the same though. Set the weight to 0 and make sure the arm floats - you do this by rotating the weight counting the numbers down. Once the arm floats, check the dial reads zero. If It is not., hold the black weight steady and move the silver dial to zero. Check the arm still floats. Then turn the weight counting up the numbers a full turn and then I would turn it to the 5 mark. See what it sounds like - if OK, try it again but turning back to the 2 mark - experiment between these two weights.
