    The little mermaid

    Hi guys:

Much to my annoyance there are now several Mermaid monitors for sale in the UK on eBay. They are not perfect but dirt cheap. Consdering I have gone to the touble of importing one and dealing with language barriers etc I am really not impressed.

Depends what sort! The early ones are really not worth having! And watch for dicey power bricks on the later ones! I bought two new ones some time ago. Not regretted it for a second.

    Hi Peter:

Someone has alluded to that previously. My reason for buying one was simply that I wanted something that looked a bit obscure/nice. I do not know much about them. Could you tell me how I can figure out which ones are old and which ones are new and why the old ones are not worth having other than because they are old and more likely to break?

    Thanks

The old ones need a special video card to work them - probably not easy to get to work with a modern PC or Mac. Andy has a couple of these so he can tell you more. To be fair, the screens themselves look good but are not that special. Once you get past the metal casing and glass contrast screen, they are just a Samsung LCD with all the normal pluses and minuses. They have built in passive speakers which I have never used and as stated before, the power brick is not really up to the job - cheap internal components - mine burned out and I had to get it repaired.

    Hi Peter:

Thankfully, mine must be one of the newer ones as it does not need the special graphics adaptor to work.

    Thanks

    Re: The little mermaid

I bought one from eBay and although cosmetically nice, the processing was all screwed up, and the image very distorted. I ended up binning it, although if I'd had more time I'd have asked here if anyone wanted any parts... Embarrassed
