    Beovox S55 restoration

Hi everyone, just a few pics of my recently restored Beovox S55's.

I got these off ebay a few weeks ago with a Beocenter 5000, the bass surrounds were rotted, tweeters needed new pigtails, the caps in the crossover were on their way out, one cabinet had a large chunk of vaneer on the top right-hand corner missing, half the plugs on the frets were broken, the frets were also very dirty and the stands covered in surface rust. They had been in storage for something like 10 years..

Here are some pics of the finished job - and no, I didnt repair the speakers, im bad with a soldering iron but I thought vintage B&O fans might like to see some speakers brought back from the grave.

Attached pic is of the cleaned and recoated stands

The frets just after being cleaned, came up really well.. they looked horrid and discoloured - i washed them in warm water with some shampoo, i used an old cloth to wipe over the cloth on the frets and remove all the dirt before rinsing them under warm water and allowing them to dry.

speakers back from restoration, fitted to stands

wooofers cones are a bit discoloured still but not sure there is much which I can do about that without affecting sound/performance of the speakers

frets finished and mounted back on the speakers, the finished product. this cabinet had a large chunk missing from the top right-hand corner... a cabinet specialist replaced the missing vaneer

Very nice job. These are good little speakers - a worthy successor to the S45-2 so well worth the effort. Nice to see someone willing to take the time and expense to restore something like these. Rather better speakers than some of the current range!

    Nice pictures Andrew!
They look great, and the stands have come up well. Not sure about the dead fish welded half way up the stand on the first picture!Wink
Hope you get many years of pleasure from these great speakers.

Very good speakers and a nice restoration job too. Are they going to be used with the 5000 they came with?

    Re: Beovox S55 restoration

I'm listening to Tracey Chapman's crossroads albumn on vinyl using the Beocenter 5000 and the S55's right now.

Loudness on, bass at 0 and treble at 1 and it couldnt sound much better.

The nude eliptical stylus MMC20EN does a fantasitc job.

The bass was a bit boomy but over the last 6 hrs of playback its started to mellow and gain depth...

    Nice job Andrew.

The stands on my S45-2's could do with a bit of TLC. What did you use to restore your stands?

    Re: Beovox S55 restoration

I didnt restore them... im good with mechanics but not that kind of stuff.

I took them to my local powder coater's. For $40 AUD which is about 18 euros they sandblasted them and powder coated them. 4 days later I got them back as they are now, i changed the colour to a slightly glossier and reflective silver.

By having them properly powder coated the surface will last alot longer than if i just sanded and painted them, and they removed all the surface rust properly.

They have come up a treat, i am very happy with them.

Super job Andrew, I particularly like the finish on the stands. The S55's are amongst my favourite small Beovox speakers and very underestimated.

I really enjoy my S55's as well. They were the first B&O speakers I ever got.  You did a wonderful job in restoring them. I wish more people were willing to do that.
