5.1 Surround sound.... DTS or Dolby Digital?

Just after some feedback on which format is better, DTS or Dolby Digital?

I know there will be some expert and interesting opinions out there.

Not sure it is a very helpful distinction, as if the medium you have in encoded is one and not the other, you don't have a choice. Both would therefore be my answer! DTS however offers better sound if available.

DTS playback makes sense if your processor and speakers are top-notch and your home theatre is well planned. If speakers and set-up are sub-par, then you won't be able to discern much of a difference between the very adequate Dolby Digital, and the potentially superior DTS format.

As we're waiting for the HD format war to play out we can look forward to having wide access to playback discs with much greater storage capacity, allowing for uncompressed audio files, as Peter's link shows. Too bad they couldn't agree on one format and put customers first ...

Most good players and set-ups will process both formats excellently, so then it's up to your planning for the home theatre. To those who want to put expensive speakers behind your viewing position: invest the money in the processing and room.

In my set-up with Beolab2 DTS delivers a clearly more enhanced sound than Dolby Digital. Always choose DTS if this option is available.

Thank you all, that's the response I was expecting. Most of the DVD's available in OZ have both DD & DTS on them. Now for a more advanced question. (and answer Laughing)

My setup is BC2 into Beosystem3 via scart and SPDIF (BL5,BL7.2 & BL3) so I should have all the right equipment. When I am playing movies I often hit the menu & navigate to sound format to see what it is telling me. Ick! Just checked and realised that I must manually select DTS as most will choose DD first. Tongue Tied

You are lucky, DTS is a rare find on most DVDs in the UK and sometimes I find myself drawn to discs displaying the DTS logo. I guess the sound format is decided by the BC2? My Panasonic player is the same, it favours DD over DTS and you have to select it manually.

I bet your BL5s sound better with DTS!

Yes the BL5's not only sound fantastic but FEEL great also.

Recently watched 007's Casino Royal and the scene with the building collapse was absolutely amazing, it could be FELT through the whole house. Awesome! Big Smile

With your set up if you havnt already add a Sony Playstation 3, then treat yourself to Casino Royal in Blu-ray or Black Hawk Down if you like gun battles. Switch on the uncompressed PCM sound track, and prepare to be astounded, way better the DD5.1 or DTS.

    Cheers

    Hey Pater,

Funny you should mention it, that is exactly the way I watched it Big Smile

I have even got (basic) control of the Playstation with my Beo4 through Lintronic and a OEM IR adaptor.

Must get Black Hawk Down now I guess.

I take it you know that you need to select the pcm track on the blu-ray disc otherwise you just get the dd5.1 track as default.

    Cheers

    Yes, thanks Peter.

It is a shame that preference settings can not be selected for any movie played. Just have to remember, should be easy enough as a good movie can still be crap with poor sound.
