    Gift - Beomaster 7000 and Beocord 7000

Hi,  I just inherited the Beomaster & Beocord 7000.  I did not however receiver the paperwork and remote.  It seems the remote is quite necessary to operate the Beomaster :(.  The Beomaster powers up just fine as the relays engage, however the cooling fan does not operate and I can not switch among the sources, adjust the volume, tones, etc.  No Music.  I can detect a brief pulse through the headphones as the system powers up.  The used Beolink can be obtained on the 'bay, but for considerable cash.  Will anyone offer suggestions to help operate this unit?  Any manuals?  Will someone sell me a Beolink controller?

To control this you need one of the following:

The most basic remote would be a Beolink 1000. This is a one way remote and will allow you to select sources, tune the radio and control the sound.

The next cheapest would probably be a MCP-5500 or 6500. This will allow you to program the unit's timer as well as all the source and sound functions. It is a two way remote and displays what the system is doing.

The last remotes are the Beolink 5000 and 7000. The last is the most complex and is very sophisticated. It would allow you to control every function on any source attached to the Beomaster 7000. It is however complicated, expensive and getting old so not so reliable.

I would suggest that an MCP-5500 and a Beolink 1000 would be good investments as the Beolink 1000 is a very good everyday remote and the MCP will allow you to access the programming functions. A Beo4 would act in much the same way as a Beolink 1000.

As far as manuals are concerned, you can either join as a gold or silver member here in which case you will find all the manuals are downloadable or you can join the official B&O site where they have a manual for the Beosystem 6500 available which is pretty much the same which the same operating system.

To get something now, put the system together, put a tape in the Beocord and start it and the Beomaster will turn to the Tape source - you do not have any control over the volume except with a remote though. You can actually cycle through some other sources, namely the radio stations by attaching an aerial and pressing the side of the Beomaster labelled STEP. You can also mute it by pressing the other side and can switch it off by a prolonged press on the same side.

I will add that I managed fine with a Beolink 1000 for twelve years when I got my new 7000 system in 1993.
It will do everything except the timer functions and can be found regularly on eBay from anything between £20 and £70 ish.
Nice things to inherit my friend!

Re: Gift - Beomaster 7000 and Beocord 7000

I agree with Andy - very nice inheritence and a Beolink 1000 is a "must have" item to go with this. If you are set on having 2 way com's then the beolink 5000 would be the best alternative but they are quite easily damaged whereas the Beolink 1000 can be used as a hammer!! Tuning radio stations isn't straightforward with the beolink 1000 but once you have done it once it isn't too difficult - you will need an ariel attached though or you'll have no chance.

The beolink 7000 and MCP6500/5500's are necessary to make full use of all the other functions but none of these are particularly well suited for every day use. The (rather large) MCP's eat batteries and the Beolink 7000 is just gorgeous in all respects but not really a hand held remote and bigger than you may think.

Also bear in mind that any timer functions etc.. that are programmmed using a MCP or Beolink 7000/5000 can only be cancelled using the same model of remote that activated them.

    Chris.

The use of metaphors should be avoided like the plague. They're like a red rag to a bull to me.

I've had the same batteries (still the first set for me) in my MCP6500 for over a year, so it's not that bad - granted, I don't use it as my No.1 remote, but still daily to check the radio station that plays, etc. since I can't see the Beomaster display from my desk. Makes for a nice table clock as well (although you have to keep the flap open for that button) Wink

But get a Beolink 1000 anyway - it will work with just about any B&O kit for the last 20 years if you ever decide to get more, and is a lot cheaper than a Beo4.

MANY thanks for your thoughtful comments and help.  I have a pair of Kef 104.5 I hope to mate this system with once I secure the Beolink 1000 from EBAY.

In my home, with high schoolers and spaniel dogs, I ofter find my remotes lost in/under the sofa.  I'll choose the rugged Beolink 1000.  Thanks.

You might want to think about the capacitor alteration on the Beomaster which livens up the sound. Have a look at the workshop notes on Beocentral.

Re: Gift - Beomaster 7000 and Beocord 7000

I got the Beolink 1000 remote, and I became dissatisfied with the performance of my Beomaster 7000.  I took it to a friend to determine why I can't seek/scan radio stations, and more importantly, the unit seems to be perpetually in the "mute" status.  I may have to take this into the shop.  I can hear the music if the volume is turn nearly all the way up.  The "mute" button on remote and front panel activate the relay, but makes absolutely no sonic change.  No fuses for the amp section???  Does anyone have a schematic for the IC, or at least the "Mute" circuit?

If you have your speakers plugged into the Speaker2 socket, mute will have no effect. Mute only works on the Speaker1 socket.

Re: Gift - Beomaster 7000 and Beocord 7000

I tried the all 4 speaker connections and the headphones.  All met with the same result - very little volume, but the loudness and tone controls are obviously functioning properly.  Heat sinks are warm...  I am unable to seek/scan the radio stations or switch from AM to FM.  I can use the preset stations.  Finally, I cannot get the radio stations or "Mute" light to illuminate on the front panel.  I wonder if there is a bad IC on the tuner boardHmm    There are no "pre-out"connections on this unit, or is there?  I see no jumpers.
