Second Opinion from across the pond

In-field training began this week...the first reaction that I received was extremely positive.  I'll get to see it Thursday night and most of the day Friday.

Can you please find out if it will play DJ mixes and classics without "gaps" between songs.

I know early Ipods had that problem, today there is a flag in Itunes that activates "gapless" playing. I honestly don't know how other MP3 deal with this, apparently it had to do with the MP3 format.

That is for me a must have feature .........

I now have it at home and there are gaps between the tracks even if they are short, much shorter than on my previous BS9000. Send and email to B&O and ask for an DJ option without gapsSmile, Brgds Ingvar

If you play a DJ mix CD on a BS9000 there would not be any gaps at all. I think you are refering to the time itself between songs and that would be different from CD to CD. I refer to CDs that are specifically recorded as a continues mix without any noticeable gaps, .i.e. whoever remixes the song typically blends them together towards the end ....

With classics you will find a similar scenario ..... so question remains open .......

Itunes has that flag that indicates this. I have no idea how other vendors handle this scenario but I remember from the early days that this was the most annoying thing ever and ruined the listening experience for many of my CDs.

Re: Second Opinion from across the pond

    Hi all

have now seen and played with BS-5 and was told that gapless play is supported.  I Haven't had the chance to test for myself yet, but I'm a bit surprised because the subject came up more than once.  Of course, if the gaps are 'shorter than on [your] BS-9000" I have to wonder what is really going on since the 9000 always plays gapless.

I think what he wants is http://www.pacemaker.net/device/ ; a gadget that can take any MP3 song and automatically turn it into a gapless mix ....

If it can do gapless, that would be great news. For some funny reason I got already the email from B&O that the BS5 is available, however I am sure my local store doesn't have it yet ...

Re: Second Opinion from across the pond

I listened to the legendary FZ Live-Album "Roxy and elsewhere" this morning, and my BS5 did NOT play it gapless. There were small brakes and clicks clearly audible between the tracks. This album was converted to 256-AAC with itunes. Next listening was James Taylor`s Live-Album disc1. Same format, same result. Next step was to rip this album in lossless format via Beoplayer directly copied to the BM5. Beoplayer is installed on my mac mini. It worked without any problems, and this album plays gapless. So I think yes, gapless is supported, but only in lossless format...(??)

Besides all the other problems this should also be on the list for the next update...

I think that lossless on the beoplayer is using wav which does not have that problem (neither did sonys attrac format that they had on their mini disk). The gap is specific to AAC and MP4 format I believe.

I found that discussion interesting. It seems Itunes adds an ID3 tag and then the player itself has some sort of algorithm to remove the gaps that MP# and WAV files carry.

    Hi Russ,

Do you know when the BS5 will be available in North-America?

    Thanks, Koert
