Beogram 5000 has a mind of its own!

My (80's type) Beogram 5000 has developed an interesting character trait, namely that it starts and lowers onto the record and then immediately switches off again. And then sits for a bit and starts itself again, before stopping once more. This it does a few times before stopping and staying stopped!

Well, that is until I go to take the record off and touch the top plate, when it switches itself on again and we go through the whole rigamarole once more!

I have disconnected it from the Beomaster 5000 in case some spurious Beolink signals were setting it off, but it still does the same when unconnected. Any thoughts anyone, before I delve into it - Capacitors? IC? Mischevious ghost?!

For now I have replaced it with a recently acquired Beogram 8500 and have to say that, with the same MMC4 fitted, the 8500 does not sound as good as the 5000. Interesting................
