Hi,

I wonder if anyone might be able to point me in the right direction for sorting out my Beocenter cassette deck.

I have only just acquired the center and it is in mint condition, everything working fine except the cassette deck.

When it plays a tape the sound quality is stunning, but there is some very obvious wow and flutter on a lot of my tapes. It has just had new belts fitted (not by me, but by someone who knows about such matters).

I'm happy to open her up and dig around inside if it is likely to be a fairly simple solution.

 Your comments would be  most appreciated.

I was only told the belts had been done, but the guy who supplied the unit seems to be a very honest enthusiast and I have no reason to doubt him.

The thing I forgot to mention was that when the tape deck is selected there is a very noticable humming coming from the casette area. This happens even before  a cassette is inserted. It sounds like a motor constantly whirring away.

If you open up the Beocenter you will see a ground wire running to the middle screw at the bottom of the cassette assembly (nearest the front of the unit). Unscrew the screw and clean the wire contact, I would suggest that you run the wire underneath the metal tape deck assembly rather than sitting it on top and relying on the screw to form the earth to the unit.

I rebuilt my tape and noticed a humming noise from my speakers, I cleaned this wire and relocated it to under the metal surface of the tape deck assembly and then sat the assembly on top of it then replaced the screw, removed the noise totally.

Also worth checking the other end of the ground wire to make sure its attached correctly.

Worth actually poking around the whole unit to check ground wires are attached securely and give them a quick squirt of contact cleaner to ensure they are grounding correctly.
