when i power up my 32" Avant there seems to be a rather loud spring like noise

this is as soon as i press the power button before the curtains draw back

any idea what the problem is?

Sorry, I am not very technically minded, but if it is more of a hissing noise, I think it's a process called de-gaussing and is normal.
If I am speaking drivel, I'm sure someone will be along to correct me shortly.

That sound is completely normal! It is the tube switching on and doing it's thing before it reveals a perfect picture. Both my B&O crt tv's do it

The sound you are hearing when you switch on your AVANT or any CRT TV is the "Degaussing Coils" around the tube energising for a couple of seconds. If you did not have this "Degaussing" then you would find parts of the picture deformed or a particular colour showing in one corner.

When you switch off your TV it is not possible to reduce the magnetic field around the tube completely to zero, so this degaussing process eliminates this unwanted magnetic field and subsequently allow you AVANT to function correctly.
