Beocord 5000, type 4715, 1970'ies model, misbehaving
Hi there I just bought a Beocord 5000 on a flee-market for 150£, it is the two-head model, not the first 3 head i think. It is in running condition, but has a tendency to stop playing or rewinding after some seconds, as if it thinks the tape has ended. Sometimes, on the other hand, it can run for 10 minutes without stopping. Should I replace the belts? Is that the problem? Also, The Dolby button seems to be dead, it does not respond to either putting dolby on or off. It is just on all the time. It is truly a great machine, beautifully built and lovely to operate, would be nice to use it as a stand alone tape-player with it's headphone socket. br Christian

Hi! I have the 4705 type Beocord 5000, too. Is the tape counter working? There is a sensor that sees if the tape is stopped and that's connected to the counter. It might stop sometimes during the rewind etc. if not working (belt broken). The buttons have a plastic part that might come off from the circuit board and the key won't affect. It's quite easy to fix when you have the machine taken apart. I can explain the dissassembly better later on.

The tape-counter is mostly not working, however, i have one time seen it rotate the digits, not not always. So all in all, replacing all the belts and fixing the Button for Dolby on/off would bring the Beocord back to life. There are some disassmebley instructions on the bottom of the recorder, but your instrucsions is much appreciated. Br Christian

You clearly frequent a better class of flea market than me! £150 is a heck of a lot for a BC5000! £1.50 for a non working one would be more like it! These are not easy machines to service! This is the one device that my old dealer (Windows of the Arcade) refused to service for me. they said that even if there is only one problem before you open it, there will be ten more before you can close it back up! Tim Jarman fixed mine and very kindly remachined some bits for it! Wonderful cassette player and the only B&O player as all the others had the cassette transport brought in from another maker.

These are horrible decks to repair but extremely good looking! And yes, the only made by B&O themselves. There is a small belt for the tape counter, that gets easily snapped if the deck is dissassembled without paying attention. Also there are several parts - the tape mechanism, the aluminium control panel and the black panel and the lid - that can be taken off and most of them have adjustment to move exactly on the same distances to each other. Especially the tape deck can be moved to every direction. Would this be time for a workshop with pictures - how to dissassembly the Beocord 5000 type 47x5? :)

Sounds good to me! Though I doubt I would be brave enough to do it!

All in all I have had 3 of these, not one has ever worked properly. Got one in the garage at the moment which just runs slow. Lovely looking deck as you say though. Craig

The slow running would be even a relatively easy fix - inside there is a potentiometer to adjust the speed! I had a slight tragedy with a Beocenter 9000 just an hour ago (short-circuit during repair) and I am feeling so depressed that the BC5000 guide will have to wait... :(

oups.... the price I paid was 150 Dkk, or £15... , as an economist, i always get the numbers wrong... Dillen (martin) has a belt replacement kit under way, so I'll wait for that before i open the beast, i find Martins instructions to be very elaborate. Sometimes the Beocord 5000 works, and when it does it sounds very nice, but only for about 5 minutes, then it usually stops. Br Christian

Ok, sorry to hear about that. I think I'll leave the Beocord 5000 project until the belt replacement kit arrives. It is not running slow, the music sounds right, but it just stops for every 5 seconds sometimes. If you remind me, I'll make a photo-tread of the resturation, together with the belt replacing on a Beocord 3500 I also recently bought. Could be fun, however, i don't think there is any economics of scale repairing two tape-decks at the same time, don't mix them up br Christian

I really hope I can deal with the BC9000 somehow! :( As soon as I have that figured out I will get back to the BC5000. I think I have some pictures of it's disassembly somewhere... There's nothing too complicated but it will be much easier if you have some tips on what to do and what not to do! The main drive belt will be the most difficult to replace. It's deeply inside the drive mechanism and you need to take apart most of the mech. I've done it once but hardly. And no, don't mix the two up! :)

Far more reasonable! I would happily pay £15 for one - and indeed have paid far more in the past!!
