    Making a superthin Scart cable

    Hi

I would like to build a superthin Scart cable for connecting a non B&O DVD to a TV.

What is the minimun amount of wires in the cable for this? (I only want 2xaudio and simple composite video, "one-way")

About the cable, can I use a powerlink-cable for this?

    Best regards

    • Audio L+R: 2 shielded cables
    • Composite video: shielded cable, preferably proper 75 ohm coaxial, but you can get away with audio cable if the distance is not too long (one meter or so, longer runs will work but the picture gets worse depending on the type of the cable)...
    • Pin 8: SCART switching control, which you don't need if you can force the TV into displaying the signal from the SCART by some other means (and take care of aspect ratios manually). Otherwise, any single wire will do, the video ground is common with this.

...but I'd hate watching composite video as your DVD probably would output RGB as well. It's three more coaxials and pin 16, though...

There are rather thin dual shielded audio cables available in "siamese twin" format - you could use a run of that for the audio, then split some more of the cable and use one half for composite video. Or perhaps bastardize a pair of stereo RCA cables: just snip off the connectors, solder the wires to SCARTs and you will have shielded routing for all of the four signals above.

    Thanks for your input!

What do you think of using a 8-wire powerlink cable for a one way with RGB and audio?

    4 wires for video

    1 wire for video ground

    2 wires for audio

    1 wire for audio ground

Will that work on a cable length of aprox 5-6 m?

I'm sure it would work in the sense that you will see the picture and hear the sound, but 5-6 meters is a long span for video to run in cable of unknown impedance. I think you would see some ghosting but I can't guess how disturbing it would be.

If you really want to use Powerlink cable, I think your best bet would be to use pins 6&7 for composite video, and the other shielded pair (3/2 + 5) for audio. Since you can't get shielded signals for all of R, G and B (and composite for sync), just plain composite might actually look better in the end.

But I guess the only way to know for sure is to try it Smile

    I'll do that!

I will get back with feedback of the result.

    Thanks Mika!
