    BeoCom 6000 - Virgin - Any Advice

    Hi - I have some BeoCom phone which has been wonderful since I bought it nearly 12 years ago. I recently moved house and it was working perfectly on my old BT line but in the new house I have had virgin TV, Phone and broadband installed and as soon as I plug the phones in they “kill” the line. Virgin have been out and the line is fine it just seems the phones are not compatible with the line.

    Does anyone know anything about this?? I am not sure if it has something to do with digital line over analogue as the phones are quiet old!

    I would love to get to the bottom of it before I throw my be-loved phones in the bin!

    Many thanks, Vix

    We have our Phone, Broadband and TV from Virgin Media too. We have a Beocom 4 and Beocom 1401, both of which work perfectly. Have you tried another phone on the line to see if that works O.K.?

    You may need broadband filter on all your phone socket,if you all ready have them make sure you have not plugged the telephone line lead straight into the filter.Tony, beo com engineer.

    We have Virgin here too. I have two Beocom 6000's and a Beocom 2 attached to a PSTN base and we haven't had any problems.

    The filter issue is a red herring as they are only needed dor ADSL Broadband via a BT line. The BB Connection on Virgin is wired separately so the issue doesn't arise.

    I suggest you try the PSTN unit and phones in another house as it is possible the problem lies withthe phone or the PSTN unit rather than the line.

    wirralsimon is right about the filter with virgin,but you may have taken the filter with you when you moved.IT wont be the phone or the pstn it its a line problem.Make sure the phone line is a b&o line lead and its not been mixed up with a non b&o lead when you moved house.Tony

    Find the master socket and remove the faceplate. Plug your phone into it and test. Its what the phone engineer would do. Their is an awful lot of dodgy phone wiring in peoples houses these day. No offence if you did it.

    I second blacktony's advice about using the original B&O phone line. I had some similar problems and realised I had used a non-B&O phone line to connect to the socket. The correct one is black (as opposed to beige which a lot seem to be). I think it might have had four gold connectors as opposed to two on the non-B&O line.

    Good luck

    What cables are you using to connect the pstn unit to the telephone connection.

    BT in its wisdom have chosen  their own standard on socket wiring, which is very different from the rest of the world! Bless BT Surprise

    The rj11 connector used by BT have the 2 phone wires connected to outside pins, pin 1 and 4 and the earth and bell signal to the two inner pins, 2 and 3 .

    This is a source of issues when using UK phones abroad or visa versa .

    Not sure what the B&O supplied cables in the UK are wired. I have US B&O set in the UK so knew what to do to make them work.

    You might simply get it to work by avoiding UK type cable ( brought with you from UK) and use locally sourced cables.

    Peter

    Re: BeoCom 6000 - Virgin - Any Advice

    Assuming the following:-

    • You have ADSL filters (see picture below) connected to each phone outlet which has a phone connected and;
    • The Beocom 6000 previously worked correctly and;
    • You have tested the phone socket with another non Beocom phone

    then the problem is almost certainly going to be the line driver in the phone exchange. No matter who the telecoms provided is, when they test the line they are almost certainly not going to find a problem because they just test the line for functionality, but the problem is normally lack of line current. The Beocom 6000 draws a little more line current than most phones. To under stand what I am talking about please review the thread HERE where this person in France had the line tested OK yet once the line driver was replaced it all worked.

    A typical example of a microfilter is below
