Cover art with Frontrow (preview.jpg) and external HD

I just got my new mac mini the other day, running leo and frontrow with no problems sofar.

I also managed to get cover art displayed for my video_ts folders if I copy them in the movie folder of my boot drive (movie folder/dvd name/preview.jpg...)

However, if I create an alias of the video_ts folder named e.g. "Great Movie" in the boot drives movie folder pointing to my external HD, frontrow still list the ripped DVD but does not show the cover art anymore.

What's wrong here? Any idea? How do I get cover art displayed if movies are stored on external drives?

    thank you
    Karsten

You could give symlinking a try. Linky

It behaves on a lower level than Aliases, so it *should* work.

If not, just set iTunes to use your external HDD for music & movies, and rip the movies with HandBrake. I have quite a few movies ripped with HandBrake, and iTunes allows you to modify the artwork which will then be displayed in FrontRow and on the AppleTV (which is what I use).

Thanks for your help....excuse my lacking mac skills, but how does symlinking works? I did a quick search, but nothing like a "how to..." was found.

As far as I understand handbrake it encodes the DVD to a smaller format, but I like to keep the orginal umcompressed. Any thoughts here?

    thank you

    • do not use "make Alias from Folder" using the Desktop to create an Folder Alias from the your Folder
    • open Terminal Application and create a logical link from your "Great Movie Folder"
    • run command > ln -s /Users/.../Great\ Movie\ Source /Users/.../Great\ Movie\ Dest
    • if you are not the owner of the Movie folder, let root do the job:
    • sudo ln -s /Users/.../Great\ Movie\ Source /Users/.../Great\ Movie\ Dest

Sometimes a solution is simple but hard to understand or to spot. A fellow from avsforum had the right tip for me: Preview.jpg instead of preview.jpg makes the difference....

Does anybody know how I can get cover art to work from my ReadyNAS NV+ using its iTunesServer to my FrontRow on my iMac when playing music or films?
