I think I am infected

Anyways! for the last few days, my pc has been running slow and I have been struggling to change or amend files etc and as of yesretday I am unable to run any MS software or disc scans and even on my profile I now unable to go onto the net via firefox however I can logon via someone elses profile but am still unable to change any settings.

When closing my pc, I get a unable to close BTtray.exe message which I believe is a virus. I have downloaded hijack this but cannot run the tools to remove the infected prgorammes!

Any help anyone? apologies to the mods but would appreciate if someone could help!

It is possible, but usually BTtray.exe is the Bluetooth software, so I think the problem is not here.

If You haven't got a virus scanner installed, try the online scanners (www.pandasoftware.com), or the trial version of nod32.

I googled the error message and found that sometimes hackers can use this to access your pc? I have a bluetooth dongle installed but have removed for the time being.

Also have serveral virus scanners installed but none are working and if they do open up then just freeze!  

Just tried downloading pandas but again, once IE is opened and I try and download it just freezes...

 

Have you tried getting someone to download a virus checker to a USB key?

It's a bit worrying when you say you have several virus checkers installed. You shouldn't really have more than 1 running at any one time or they may clash with each other and cause all kinds of problems.

Likewise I got into a horrible mess with my computer when I upgraded to XP service pack 2 and it enabled my Windows Firewall alongside another firewall I had installed and for a while I couldn't run anything.

One thing you could try is to disconnect your computer from the network/internet, then disable all the virus checkers and firewalls  that you may be running and see if the computer runs normally. If it does, then it is probably some kind of software issue and not a virus. Remember to re-enable one virus checker and one firewall before you go back on the internet!

Whatever is up with my pc will not allow me to download or install anything everything just freezes!!!!

@ Simon, I will try that.. and will disable everything and try and scan and see if this makes any difference.

 

Two more ideas:

Do You have previous system restore points? 

You can check it in the "help and Support Center"->"Undo changes to your computer with System Restore "-> restore my computer to an earlyer time. If You select the last restore point, then it may restore a correct system, which will work perfectly.

If not any restore point is exist, or all of them is too old (after it, You've installed programs, and so on), then try to use the "sfc" from the start menu->run like this: sfc /scannow   , which will check Your system files against to the original installation files, and it restores the correct ones. Therefore it does not harm Your files, just the system, but IMHO please notice, to use the System restore is a little bit risky operation, so I suggest to do it with extraim care.

Try booting Windows in Safe Mode, this usually renders the virus harmless temporarily, meaning you can remove it...

Well... still having problems.. I think my harddrive maybe goosed..

All is slow.. I am struglling to do anything to be honest! I did restore the pc and that fixed the internet and some other apps as I am now able to go online on my own profile.

Still unable to to configure my profile/install/modify anything.

Firefox has lost all my bookmarks and has a wierd screen size/setting.  Tried to reintsall my bookmarks but they are lost after I close the browser down and if they do drop in you can only see them in the tab and not on the bar.

Seems I may need a new pc...

 

 

I suggest to show it to an IT, maybe it's just a SW problem, maybe only the HDD is damaged.

Maybe worth checking your drive is still working in "ATA" mode rather than "PIA".

Right click "My Computer", Click "Properties", "Hardware", "DeviceManager",  Double Click "IDE ATA/IATAPI controllers", Double Click "Primary IDE Channel", Click "Advanced Settings" - ensure "DMA if available" is selected in the drop down boxes.

Is the HD full? That can cause all kinds of strange errors.

Well.. I downloaded the latest windows update and all seems ok again bar firefox! I am now able to run programmes and amend profiles etc! Something still seems amiss so I may have the pc looked at. 

@ Puncher, will have a look and see, whats the difference between the two?

@ Simon, HD is still running with around 30gb spare although it is getting filled and near 4 years old or so.. 

 

PIO mode means all disk access has to be handled by the processor whereas DMA means data can be shifted from HD directly. The net affect is that if your disk controller was in PIO mode it would take an absolute age to boot up or to load anything from the HD.  If you think everything is now OK other than Firefox then it would seems that this isn't the case (I would estimate about 5 mins to boot in PIO mode).
