OK, the Christmas is over, so it's time to take on this next challenge in my Beosystem 6500 :-)

Long story short: the sled won't move. Or actually it moves freely, but not by itself. When I plug the recorder in or press the "open" button, the motor spins for a while (with an ugly noise), and then the unit gives up. I also found the belt of the tape transport loose inside the machine and that motor is noisy too, but I suppose that's an easy problem.

I guess the first question is, how do I detach the sled to see the mechanism underneath it? After quite a while of head scratching I still can't figure it out...

Hi,

to access the sled motor you have to disassemble a lot of parts...

- Open the cabinett, 2 screws on the back

- disassemble the cover over the drivedeck. Near the drive are 2 hooks, bend them a little bit.

- disconnect the keyboard

- disassemble the red clamps around the mainboard and disconnect the 2 cables to the powersupply and the slideframe

- disconnect the drive cables

- loose the 2 screws for the front cover and pull the front a little bit out

- the mainboard can now be mounted in a vertical position... be very carefull not to break the board. There are 2 guides and 2 steel hooks to fix it in this position

- now you can disassemble the motor, just 1 screw

 Common faults are: broken gear, hard grease on the gear, bad belts, loose or lost bolts because of bad grease.

Got it. Those designers are crazy :-) The belt was cut, so I guess I'll be happy until tomorrow when I go and get a new one (and for the transport as well) and see if there are any more problems. Hope not!

Success again! I had to replace every single belt including the tiny one for the rotation sensor. The flat belt inside the mechanism was a tricky one to get in place, but everything seems to work just fine now. What a cool machine! I had never seen one in action before...

Well, it wasn't quite this easy. Sometimes the tape transport will just quit. The motor seems to be running way too slowly or just with inadequate torque. Sooner or later, after some twiddling, it may suddenly work again as if nothing happened. I've tried rotating the mechanism manually and it doesn't seem to be unusually sticky, and the belt isn't slipping either.

Am I looking at a bad motor, or could the control circuit be acting like this?

Anyway the motor seems to be worn, there is some play in the axle bushing and it was quite noisy before I silenced the bearing with a tiny amount of gun oil. Is this a generic motor (voltage, RPM?) or something I'd only find in other Beocords? 

The same Motor is also used in the Beocord 7000 and BS2500 and Ouverture.

If you replace the complete drive, watch out! The BC6500 and the BS2500 are compatible, the BC7000 and Ouverture are different but look quite the same. A cable connector is 180 degrees different, so do not connect them or you will have some fire in the deck!  If the connector is changed, it will work.

The motor can be damaged, some oil will help... there is a metal cover that can be opened, then you can oil also the backside.

Below this cover is a small round board with the tacho unit. There is a small electrolyt capacitor on it, this one is very often defect. Replace it.

Next defect is, that the axles of the drive for the cassette have old and sticky grease. Open the small 2mm rings on these 2 axles carefully, clean them and use good oil for this. Then Rewind will work again very fast ;)

Thanks, I'll try opening the motor too the next time the machine acts up. It has now worked for a long time with no problems.

Many of my 20+ year old Dolby C recordings sound surprisingly good! Some of the music is really bad, though

Read this thread with interest.  Have a Beocord 6500.  One of the internal belts - about 8cm long - which seems to control the head movement, fell out of the bottom of the tray when open.  Managed to get it back in place around two small capstans & all worked OK briefly, but fell off again within minutes.  Guess it no longer has adequate tension/elasticity.  Do you know where I can get a replacement?

Hi Mark and welcome to Beoworld

Member Dillen (Martin) is the guy to ask. He supplies all sorts of belt & capacitor kits for older equipment. Not just any old stuff either, they are often higher spec'ed than the originals. You may as well change the whole lot as the others are bound to fail shortly.
