    Beovox S45 and S45-2

    Two models and two questions:

What are the concrete differences between this models

     and

are there any speakers of these series who got foam surrounds?

    regards

There are actually three models! Let's get the one you don't want out of the way first! That is the S45 Type 6427. It has a double grille, only two drivers and is prone to foam rot. Spurn it as you would spurn a rabid dog!

The other two are more interesting! Have a look here for a run down - the S45-2s pictured are mine. They are very similar except the -2 model have a flat back and the extra metal trim where the older model has a resin back that has cut outs for mounting. The older ones are not so common. Either will be great though it would probably be worth replacing the capacitors inside - an easy job.

Just seen that Beocentral are referring to them as Bookshelf speakers. You would need quite a large bookshelf  to fit  them  on!

Great speakers though! I have two pairs in daily use. They all just say S45 on the front you have to look at the back to see if it is an S45-2 or not. It is worth emailing the seller if you see a pair of S45'S ON Ebay as a lot of the time they are actually s45-2's.

The ones that look the same are pretty similar in performance. I prefer the S45-2 simply because they look a little neater. They are a reasonable size but for their time are small speakers and they don't have the most extended bass in the world. What they do have is very accurate though. The S75s could also be bookshelf mounted - though this would require quite a bookshelf and the bass would be rather pronounced! Laughing

I agree that the Beovox S45 and S45-2 are very similar in performance, both surprisingly good for their size and age. Apart from the different backsides the only difference is the tweeters and the corresponding filters that were updated.

So I did it right, I bought a very nice pair of the S45-2. It will take another two weeks to get them, but my friend who has seen them already,  told me, they looks like deliverd just from the dealer, no scratches at all and in best condition.

I will let you know how my  opinion is, after hearing a week or two with these spekers.

    best regards

    Hi Peter,

You seem to know about S45. Do you have a hint as to how to remove the grille? (I have a little ding in the metal trim and could fix it easily with the grille removed).

    Thanks.

The grills just pull off, they are held on by strange pegs with balls on the end which push into holes. Be as careful as you can though as the pegs are easily snapped.

Thanks. That is what I thought: I tried to pull them off, but they seem very, very tight and I didn't want to break anything. I guess I will try again with more confidence...

There's a simple solution to those sticking balls!

Use Silicon Spray on the balls, and on the receptacles, before you replace the grille.

Thereafter, you can remove and reattach the grilles with ease, and confidence that nothing will break!

I'm having some difficulty working on a pair of S45 Type 6427's with foam rot. I've dissasembled everything that I can but I still cannot remove the woofer due to the plastic ring on the front of the baffle. Any clues how to remove that plastic baffle ring?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

You are approaching from the wrong side! The front panel is held on with screws which are down the holes for the grille pegs. You can then remove the woofer which is held in place by some clips which are attached by screws.

Thanks Peter. I'm inside the speaker, and have completely removed the clips. Unfortunately the woofer is mounted on the outside of the baffle behind the cosmetic circular plastic cover. I'll post a picture when I get home later today.

Just pull it back - the foam will have stuck to the plastic trim piece.

No such luck. That plastic ring has been cemented on.. I'm going to try gently heating it with a heat gun and will report back upon completion. Wish me luck!

    Re: Beovox S45 and S45-2

No heat, just pull using controlled force.
You are fighting a rubber ring that binds to the cabinets plastic bezel and the drivers metal chassis.
Grab a part of the drivers metal basket chassis and put your thumb on the plastic surround and press hard and long.
    It will eventually give.

On the S45, the plastic ring is an integral part of the front panel.
(On larger models, S55, S80 and up, the plastic ring is a separate part - but it still binds to the driver).

Ahh okay, thanks for that info. I'll keep at it.

The woofers we removed with ease and without damage to the cabinets. A few gentle twists of a large standard screwdriver allowed the woofer to be separated from the glue that was holding them in place behind the baffle. Thanks for your help sorting this out.
