What stylus/cartridge's for Beogram 4002 can be used?

Hi this is my first post and looking forward to learning about linear turntables and the beautiful vintage line from B&O. Now here is my situation. I need to know what what other cartridge/ stylus other than the MMC20EN will be a direct plugin for a 4002 beogram? So far from my searchin the web that all I can figure. I hope there is more compatibility with later styles for example mmc-4? Reason being I believe my wife bought me a used 4002 for chrismas from a music store that we visited a couple weeks ago. I had never seen a B&O in person and probably seemed excited to my wife when I started inquiring about it to the sells person. I was astonished how heavy it was and really wasn't to interested in buying it for $250.00. I buy turntables online and Im pretty particular about what I choose. I recently in the past six months got into the whole vinyl thing and started paying attention to auctions on ebay On B&O turntables. So now my wife has given me some clues to make me believe that she has bought this 4002 that might need a new stylus. I hope she jewed em down on the price? Anyway I will be very greatful even if she overpaid for it. Please give me some info on the interchangeability of the cartridges? Thanks

The cartridges that fit a 4002 are:

    SP15, MMC3000,MMC4000,MMC5000,MMC6000, MMC20S,MMC20E,

    MMC20EN,MMC20CL,MMC10E

However none of these are available new so you should consider a Soundsmith cartridge. I have a SMMC20EN in my 4004 and it is superb. The SMMC20CL and SMMC20CL+ are supposed to be even better.

I reckon $250 is OK for a good 4002. Paid more than that for similar decks myself!

Thanks Peter for the quick response. Is there a link where this info on what cartridges fits what Deck. It would be helpful to know other options available for future decisions. Thanks again Peter.

Re: What stylus/cartridge's for Beogram 4002 can be used?

There are three types of stereo B&O cartridges. The original SP series which fit the early decks with the round arm - BG1000, 1200, 3000 and Beocenter 3500 amongst others.

The next series was the MMC20  series which was around for some time which came in with the Beogram 4000 and was used in most readial decks with the square section arm - BG1100, 1500, 1602, 1900, 2200, 2400 as well as the 4002, 4004 and 8000. The range nomenclature is of the form MMC20X or MMCX000 except for two exceptions - the rare SP15 - which is an early form which became the MMC4000 and the MMC10E which was a US model.

The last models changed again and took a smaller cartridge - the MMC1, 2,3,4 and 5. Decks using this range included the BG1800, 2000, 3000 and the stacking decks - 5005, 5500, 6500 and 7000.

Soundsmith do have a list on their site but the confusion arises in that some decks share names! There are 4 different Beogram 3000s for instance. Feel free to ask if you need on here! We will always try to answer quickly! A type number of the deck is always helpful! For the 4002, I would recommend a MMC20CL if possible and nothing below a MMC20EN. The only problem with the Soundsmith range is that they are all black and don't match the arm. Excellent sound quality though.
