I may recall that the beomaster 4400 is well spoken of in this forum. I have been offered one for about 375 NKR (33£ or 46 euros).

It looks ok in picture, but it may have som defects.

 I am interested in your point of view . What would you do?
 

It depends what you mean by defects!

 If it is in working order I would be very tempted at that price. There is one on ebay now that has already reached £102.00

If its working, but in poor cometic condition its worth it.

 

Even if non-working, if it is in good cosmetic condition, it would be very likely repairable at that price and still be worth it.

It has to be worth a gamble for that sort of money, you may win, but at least you won't lose much, I'll bet you could sell the mains transformer alone for more than that.

In my view possibly the best receiver made by B&O. I have had all the good ones and this is the one I have kept for my listening system. Capacitors may need replacing and they can have other niggles but they have lots of power and excellent sound. £33 is a bargain if it works! What is broken on it? I have just dismantled one - long story!

Finally I have got i home at last. Visually it looks very nice, the woodwork is nice .

 

When I try it I only get sound in one speaker and a very weak sound in the other. In the second speaker output, no sound. When I put in the mono button, there is sound in every speaker also the other output. Every thing else is in order.

 

Does anybody have a suggestion on what is wrong with it? 

Capacitors, (though you could try the switch bank since it is a weak spot )send it to Martin (Dillen) and he´ll get it back to full glory

I learned my leason. When buying old B&O without testing first, unseen it should go directly from seller to Dillen.

I've spend alot of time finding alternatives including a B&O shop nearby but as Dillen has pointed out its worth the 3-4 hour train ride to the east and the same amount of time back.

The 2 of february I went 3,5 hour to pickup a faulty BM8000 and a CDX. Then 3,5 hour to Copenhagen to deliver to Dillen and then take a BM6000 + stands for Beovox M150s back home for another 3,5 hour train ride.

The BM6000 was DOA when I got it. Now as new playing wise and the stands fits perfectly.

The BM8000 had several critical faults. It was blowing fuses. Dillen measured standby to 240watt! Maks is 30-40.

The main trouble seem to come from other people trying to fix it without the proper knowledge of doing such repairs.

Last but not least the BG8002 still spins faultless since I got it back. It was nearly DOA too.

I have used Martin alot myself, and I can only say that he is a gift for us . But I want also to learn some little things myself, therefore I put it out here?

Diagnosing per remote is always a challenge. 

Is the BM4400 weak on all sources (Tape/FM/Phono) ?

If so, bring out the signal generator and oscilloscope and
measure around a bit. The preamp and tonecontrols would
be the place to start. Compare left and right signals and
work your way back and forth until you find the place where
the signal gets lost.

If it's weak only from one source, you should of course focus on
that source's discrete circuit.

As Kevin already mentioned, it's probably a cap acting up
somewhere in the signal path or in the power supply rail.

It can also be a faulty switch, only the oscilloscope will tell.

The Beomaster 4400 is a wonderful machine. Also one of my favourites.

Crackled and popped a bit when I first switched it on, and the right hand channel wasn't working properly, but I left it playing for a few hours and it settled down and now sounds stunning.

Bad news - took it out last night (it's been in it's box for about a year, in a warm(ish) dry cupboard) and the darn thing doesn't work! No sound at all. I get a pop when I switch the whole thing off with the speaker switch still down, but none of the sources (FM included) produce any sound. Didn't check to see if I could hear any hiss, but I don't think there was any.

Possibly an issue with the speaker protection relay, or something else?

Sounds bad! These products don't like being not used and corrosion sets in. Probably a component failure.

Shouldn't be any problems there. Probably a nice simple electrolytic capacitor! Big advantage of older equipment - built almost completely at component level with very few ICs.

You may  wish to consider replacing the electrolytic  capactors in the crossover units of the speakers. A PM to Martin (Username Dillen) is a good place to start.

Simon, I'm sorry for my late answer. Thank you!  I know Martin, he is a great B&O specialist. I've found the way to get the caps that I need. If it isn't occur, I will connect with Martin.
