    Beocom 1401 Problems

Just over a week ago I purchased the Beocom 1401(black) from my local B&O dealer. There were 2 problems with the phone. Firstly some of the numbers on the keypads looked almost as if they had faded to a sort of grey colour. Over the next day or 2 more of the numbers took on this colour. I took the phone back to my dealer and they exchanged it for another phone. My dealer had not seen anything like this before. As none of us could understand it I just wondered if anyone else had seen anything like this before.

Unfortunately there was another problem with the original phone. I discovered over the first few days that when I spoke into the phone I could hear a clicking sound through the earpiece. If I spoke louder the clicking also seemed to get louder. As I said I have now been given a replacement phone but, unfortunately, this problem still seems to exist. Before I take the phone back I wondered if anyone here might be able to shed any light on this? I am beginning to wonder if I need to adjust something maybe as I would be surprised to find there would be the same fault with both phones?

    Grateful for any thoughts.

Sounds thoroughly weird! I have a 1401 that we keep as a back up phone and it still looks and sounds as if new. The keys are also perfect so unless you have acid on your fingers, I don't understand the fading keys. If you have broadband, do you have filters fitted for the phones?

I have never experienced the fading number problem with any of my B&O equipment. It appears as if the clicking noise is not caused by your phone but somewhere in the phoneline.

Agree with Peter, we had the same problem with our Beocom 4. Fitting a filter cure it.

    Re: Beocom 1401 Problems

Many thanks for the responses. I do have broadband but know absolutely nothing about filters. If someone could please elaborate on that I would be very grateful as that sounds like it could be the problem. Is this something I have to contact my internet provider about?

    Thanks again.

Just a small box that you put between the phone and the line. It means you can be on the phone and use broadband at the same time. Available at all electronics shops like Currys etc.

When I switched to broadband I noticed a decrease in sound quality, no clicking noise just a slightly less clear sound. Some people I asked experienced the same. Can this be cured by a similar filter too?

    Re: Beocom 1401 Problems

If you have your phone line enabled with ADSL (Broadband) then every extension must have a microfilter.

The quality of these microfilters varies considerably, buying a standard one from your local store for most people is fine, however many lower quality versions have an impact on sound quality which tends to be more noticeable the longer the cable run is back to the phone exchange.

In the UK the ADSL Nation XF-1e is developing a reputation as probably the best microfilter you can buy. It's designed to work with just about any piece of telephone equipment you can find - including those that cause problems with other microfilters. This microfilter exceeds the specifications of BT SIN346.

The Excelsus Z-420P2J which sells for under £5 in the UK is also considered very good.

Actually, the best quality microfilters are not the most expensive, the two I have highlighted above can be purchased in the UK at a retail price of under £7

When it comes to B&O equipment such as Beocom & Beotalk products, the only product to date where there does seem to be a problem is the Beotalk 1200 which can provide an intermittent problem where someone leaves a message, but the News indicator does not register, so you do not know that a message has been left. This is cause by a small drop in line signal which is often linked to wet weather which changes the impedance of the phone line. If you have this problem, then change your microfilter before you go any further. I know of at least two B&O dealers who have had this problem on their own store Beocom 1200's

Thanks again for all the responses which have been very helpful. I will buy one of the Microfilters as soon as I get a chance and will let you know if the problem has been solved.
