Beomaster 5500 muted sound from speakers

Connected speakers using din plug. No apparant connection between MCP and Beomaster so can't adjust volume. What could be wrong?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Marc,

    Welcome to BeoWorld ! Smile

When you plug in the BeoMaster 5500, do your hear a click ?
After pressing the red dot on the front at the right,
    does the BeoMaster switch on?

Yes, it clicks. The MCP seems to control all functions except volume.

I believe there is an option that can be set to disable the remote. I don't have the manual at hand but maybe someone can remember how to reset this option ?

You can also try to connect the speakers to the other set of DIN outputs.

Both sets of DIN outputs work the same. To be clear, I'm getting sound out of the speakers but at volume level=0. I can't raise the volume with the circular dial despite the fact that I can control virtually every other function with the MCP.

Thanks all for your help. Can we continue to try and solve this problem?

Have you noticed the lights on the MCP flashing ?
    Are the batteries okay ?

(reason i ask is that i've experienced the MCP not functioning properly
and after replacing the batteries solved it)

Have you tried another remote? Maybe the volume control wheel of your MCP is defective. I've got one MCP 5500 that has this kind of damage, all the other functions work smoothly but the volume control doesn't.

I agree that it could be the volume wheel not working on the Master Control Panel. I've repaired several MCP's with this fault, it seems to be quite common.

Yep - probably the volume wheel, I've seen this many times myself as has Martin. There is a microswitch underneath which may simply need the contacts cleaning with some very fine abrasive paper. It may need replacing though and they are quite hard to find - unless you say pretty please with sugar & sprinklesBig Smile in which case I will pop one in the post for you. PM me if you need one.

    Chris.

Defective volume wheel sounds right. First let me try to clean the contacts. How do I access them without breaking the whole thing? If that doesn't work, I'll get down on my knees...uh, skip that...I'll say whatever you'd like and would deeply appreciate receiving a new one.

Chris, you and the rest of the guys have been great help. The system had been sitting at my ex's for years and she never used it. The contacts on the Beolink handheld remote were all corroded from leaky batteries. The connection between two of the battery terminals just "melted" away when I removed the batteries. IS THERE A WAY I CAN REPLACE THE CONTACTS AS WELL???

Thanks ever so much for all your help.

Yes, the contacts can be the problem.
    You can diagnose this by looking at the display on the MCP;
If it lights up when rotating the wheel, the contacts are fine and vice versa.

If it lights up but doesn't actually change volume, the fault
lies elsewhere, most likely in the optical pulse readout
    from the wheel.
Parts are available for this but err... not exactly as cheap as Chris'.

The contacts will have to be taken from a donor MCP, I suppose.

Exploratory surgery completed. The contacts look fine. But 2 of the 3 wires soldered to the thingy in the middle of the wheel had come loose. Can I simply solder them back together? Since I'm not very good at working with solid state components, is there somewhere I can take it to have the soldering done 'properly'? Is there a place that also sells the battery connectors for the Beolink? I'll start with whichever one is least expensive, just so I can adjust the  volume and make sure the whole system is working.

Found a dealer nearby who will repair everything.

Thanks to all for helping me to restore my beloved system!
