    you started this whole argument with some utterly stupid claims and alex and the rest of us have refuted every single one with clear basic examples of why you are posting total drivel

    you're only interested in getting a response from us and don't seem capable of doing something as simple as looking in the help menu - can you do that mr IT technician guy ?

    if you're capable of using google perhaps you might take a pot shot at apple's help site or one of the hundreds of mac help forums , macfixit , macnn , macworld etc

    but , i guess it's a lot easier to pontificate about the supposed mentality of macusers rather than directly rectifying your own problems in the first place

     what in - commodore 64's ?? 

    Much earlier than the C64. I started with COBOL on a Honeywell DPS 8/88 mainframe, later migrating to IBM 30/90s and 43/81s. I have fond memory's of the 6250 tapes we used to read and write to! I wouldn't say that I am a specialist in the context that you suggest, although I am specialized in a number of areas both old and new. As I wrote earlier, I have seen many changes with all sorts of companies in the industry so I am confident in all that I write. I am sorry that you feel threatened by that Flappo.

    Flappo, may I ask why you must be so rude with your replies? You are very defensive and clearly an angry guy. Please direct it somewhere else. A polite conversation I will have you, otherwise I'll leave you to it. I have not alienated anyone and Alex has continued to offer his advice which I have greatly received. You are the one who is calling me Mr Technician Guy and getting in a rant because I am criticizing a MAC. I will continue to do so because of my experiences. If you can't debate it calmly and sensibly then you should leave.

    guys.....take a deep breath, count to then and then realise these are different experiences / opinions are having....got to be respected without getting personal....

    I can relate to booth sides of the story....at the end of the day, we all love our different brands and we will defend them to the death not always seen the logic or stance from another persons perspective- just the way we do with B&O.....lots of flaws but we work around them and accept it for what it is- and any pundit who dares to throw **** at them we give back tenfolded........

    On the subject of the mouse! The Mighty Mouse can be programmed to both left and right click - see here! I actually don't use one as I don't like them and use a Kensington Trackball. I am going to do some editing of this thread if no-one minds!! Smile I'll have to read things first though!Laughing

    The problem with Apple's forums is that generally they're over-moderated and seem to go 'by-the-book'. MacRumors is much better once you get used to what things are like over there as they know all the tricks and the best advise to give. Or alternatively, you can always drop me a PM/email/whatever.

    Hey.. Guys!

    Mac vs Windows is a debate that never fails to turn angry on here, and it's just one of those "you like it or you don't" things.  We do the same with B&O, and to be frankly honest technically - B&O is not great value! Laughing

    I would never advocate getting personal in a thread, and will edit as necessary if i think a post is insulting or rude.  That's not the way we are here on BeoWorld as we all know. We all respect each others opinions, standings and viewpoints - and must do our best to word any objections with a little more care in our chosen words when we do.

    So, let's lighten up a little - please!  It's only a computer at the end of the day, and freedom of choice allows us to spend our money as we wish!

    Alex - 10/10 - well thought out answers  and being helpful.

    Simon - I wou;ld actually suggest that in future rather than ringing the store, try Apple Care. They are in my experience incredibly helpful and this is one area where Macs really stand out as they will help with all the Apple software and hardware rather than telling you to try elsewhere. The discussion group mentioned by Flappo is also useful  and functions in many ways like Beoworld. It is more moderated as Apple host it but seems on the whole a friendly place!

    Flappo!!!! Laughing  You responses are usually correct but I don't suppose the diplomatic service will be rushing to employ you! Starting with a new operating system, as Alex has said, can be daunting even when it is as straightforward as OSX.

    Can we all try to understand each others points of view and not be insulting. Please!

    speaking with a guy called Tom, who is now trying to help me with my Administration account that is set to Standard when apparently it shouldn't be. We can't install any software or make any changes to my computer because we can't log in! He says this is something he has never come across before and so he will phone the technical support department to find out and get back to me. I am sitting here laughing because it just goes to show that Apple is no more straightforward than a PC, which has been my point from the outset.

    If you've never used a Mac before, it would probably have been worthwhile reading the system install instructions before beginning.

    You can log in as root (unix), as Administrator, or as user. The nice thing about a Mac is that a lot of people can use one at the same time, but you can ensure that your data remains intact by just having one Admin account. If you don't have the admin account password, which you actually set as you started your computer if you followed procedure, then you can't make the changes you are trying to do.

    But your vendor sounds like a fool, since all you need do is reinstall the system, following proper procedure this time.
     

    He also said that the Administrator account should work because its a MAC. What kind of ridiculous response is that? It doesn't, and I can't log in, therefore my computer is pretty useless at the moment. Also, when you mention that you want to log in so you can install Windows they are not interested in supporting you at all.

    If you can't log in as Admin or root, then you don't have the right password, which is a mystery. However, you can start the computer from your installation disk, by inserting that disk (disk 1 if you have two). Then restart the computer, and hold down C when it reboots, this will tell the MAC to run off the disk. Once that's up, you can change the root and admin passwords. This does not require a new system install.

    What kind of customer service and support is that when you have just spent £1,400? You see Alex, my gripe is with the mentaility of some MAC users who only acknowledge and help you if you agree how wonderful MACs are! Its so childish and actually they are not great at all.     I find this attitude and statement peculiar. Are you interested in solving your problem or griping? I've heard no end of rants and gripes about Macs from PC users through the years, couldn't care less. I'm sure you have a return policy on your purchase. Just return the Mac and go to a shop that understands customer service - there are some pretty strange B&O shops, as well. But I will say one thing, Simon, I hope the attitude you displayed to the sales staff was not the one you're demonstrating here, barely one day into your "switched to Mac experience." Big Smile

    If you're not comfortable doing the off-the-disk root and admin change of password, then you can try logging in as Root from the Mac as it's operating now:

    Root user log-in procedures. Since you appear not to have your admin password, you may not find the link useful, but give it a look:

    If you haven't File Vault protected your account on the Mac with encryption, then you can use this "hack" to set a new password and username:

    Restart your mac, without the installation disk inserted, while holding down the Command and S keys. That restarts your Mac in single user mode.

     

    Write:

    #sh /etc/rc

    #passwd yourusername

    #reboot 

     

    Note the spaces, and remember your password.

    Wrong!Stick out tongue - this is the Czech spelling (I'm on a Czech Network), although, interestingly, the definition is slightly different in Czech -

I don't really want to continue too much on this subject now because I have had enough for the day, but I will pick up on a few points. I have never used a MAC before. The MAC came pre-installed with Leopard although they have since told me that it should not have done, and that they should have left Tiger on their and told me to order the Leopard CD from Apple for £5.95 to include postage and packing. Therefore the shop set up this MAC. There are no system install instructions. I would not say that my vendor is a fool, but I would most certainly say that he has little to no interest in helping me get set up properly. When I ask questions it seems there only response is, "Its a MAC so it should work..." to which I reply, "Well it doesn't." They don't really know much about what they are selling it seems.

    Why do you find my final statement peculiar? Of course I am interested in griping, I have received bad customer service and it is not acceptable. I expect all problems to be solved and for them to take me seriously, not just take my money with no aftercare service. I am going to return the iMac to them. I will call them to see if I can get a full refund. The attitude I displayed here has been fair, just and honest. I express that wherever I am.

    to be fair to simon , some apple stores i've been in have a truly bizarre condescending attitude that i find most annoying ( oxford street store is utterly bonkers )

    the so called geniuses at the genius bar have a collective IQ of pond life in my experience

    and when I asked for a demo of a mac pro , I couldn't get onto a mac as there were 5,000 backpackers looking up their emails...

     micro anvika i found good , as well as cancom , both exc mac shops - plus they have specialist knowledge !

    That sounds completely crazy! They said you should have had Tiger? And the after sales service should be far better! I actually get all my Apple equipment from the Apple Store on line and have had zero problems. Always have good instructions and very friendly after sales on the only occasion I needed to query something. I would be spitting blood! I would have expected them to have set it up if buying from a dealer or for it to be fresh in the box. It sounds a bit like you have a demonstrator!

    in future i'd advise you to browse some mac forums like macfixit or macnn , post some queries and then make an informed choice at the apple store online

    that way you deal with apple direct , cut out the middle man who some of the time simply complicates the situation  plus get sueprior service 

     applecare and the apple support line is most helpful - have you tried that ?

    Well, the mistake that's been made is that the person who installed your OS didn't communicate the password to you, then ... After the introduction of OSX this was changed, with unix user log-ins being possible.

    I actually think that if you want to keep your Mac, and have the system installation disks, then getting full control of your Mac will be done in less than five minutes.

    I haven't tried those sites no but I will. Thanks. Just got off the phone to the shop, they will only refund the iMac if it is faulty. Tom is on lunch but I have asked them to give him a nudge and call me when his break is over to find out about this Administrator account. Does anyone know how to close a Boot Camp dialogue box that has been partioning my hard drive since 6pm last night and seems to be still going? I assume it has frozen or crashed but I can't close it. If you click on the right mouse button when it is minimized the only option you get is to open it. Would it be wise to try a system restart just in case it is still partitioning the drive? All help appeciated.

    Actually I was given the password but this wasn't the problem. It was the Username that was wrong. It is set to Administrator (Standard) which I have been told is incorrect. It should be Administrator (Basic, or empty, or something else, can't remember offhand but not Standard.' Not a password problem.
