Well, when Apple puts together a keyboard that has an integrated mousepad that works as elegantly (and note the volume slider above the mousepad) then I'll sell my Edge Dinovo! (I use it chiefly when using the Mac mini that's connected to my plasma screen).

 and for searching system files you have to enter the first column ( kind ) click other and choose system files or use easyfind

the resulting search is labelled name , kind and last opened

so if you searched for files over 100 megs for example , the search will show the files but you cannot sort or differentiate the results - this is a ridiculous situation imo and must be adressed by the apple team

 to sort afterwards you have to press the plus icon and then whittle down the results , unlike tiger where it displayed the results seperated by spotlight 

imo tiger is actually superior to leopard , leopard feels a bit rough round the edges and a rushed . which is ironic considering it's taken them 2 and a half years to get it out , blame the iPhone !

Well don't forget they did work on an entirely new OS since they released Tiger originally... Tiger for Intel. They're two different OSes, and there are differences I noticed between them (had a PowerBook for a week, and it seemed less buggy than the Intel build of Tiger).

Of course Leopard is rough round the edges, it's been out for less than a week, Apple has only released a keychain update so far, which is hardly going to bring any great improvements. So far, Leopard is far more 'finished' than Tiger, Panther, or indeed any other MacOS original release so far. We won't go into Microsoft's history of initial release OS quality...

I agree about the search items though. It's a step backwards. Not an issue for me though as I never used Smart Folders. The rest of the OS has shown a huge leap forwards IMO!

one thing that is vastly improved is bluetooth

in tiger it was pretty flakey , on leopard it just works !

 

i'm sure that by 10.5.2 ( prob xmas 07 ish ) i'll be singing leopard's praises much to all the pc users annoyance :)

My daughter is the guinea pig when it comes to Leopard in our household, and she's not happy. The MacBook keeps having trouble with the Airport, and we had to do some surgery using the Terminal. Lots of complaints over at Support>Discussions>Leopard>Network connectivity about this issue.

Great OS, though. Looking forward to exploring it once I feel confident I won't have things going out of commission.

And thats whats great about OSX................a company can release an operating system that only has to work with its own, in house, designed hardware and its buggy and doesn't work and yet the followers will still announce to the world how great it is!

Company X meanwhile designs a operating system that has to work will all manner of (sometimes poorly designed) third party hardware/components and runs the majority of the worlds corporate systems and apparently its crap!

True, but often that software is related to drivers and therefore a direct consequence of Windows running on all hardware. By restricting the hardware OS X runs on, Apple can have much greater control over the software you don't even see working under the skin (background processes etc...). OS X is still however, much smarter in the way it manages it's hardware...

So they're great if you only run Apple software on your Apple computer - cool

Puncher, you're free to flame Apple's OS as much as you want. I do think that Jobs made a brilliant decision when he locked hardware and software. Microsoft never got around to building hardware beyond the X-box; IBM sold its setup to China; Dell is struggling; Compaq is getting out; HP is wondering what happened.

We may seem to be griping, but the Apple OS and interface is pure miracle compared to Windows. Try TimeMachine in the most recent OS, or use Spaces -- and get blown away by being able to do multiperson videochat, with document sharing and collaborative work across oceans on the same document, on shared desktops, over your internet line ...

Two million Leopard OS discs were sold in the opening weekend. Given that a lot of people have installed at times dodgy third party software, and are using non-Apple Wi-Fi connections (which is my daughter's problem at her mother's), you can expect some wrinkles need to be ironed out.

I'm dialing and sending music and films with my iPod Touch, to various screens and speakers around my house, with two-way feedback as to playback, what I'm listening to/watching, and with full control of it - over Wi-Fi. Took me an hour to set up.

I'm pretty pleased with my Apple investment.

Microsoft is making good in a serious way with Photosynth/Seadragon. They know what they're about over at Redmond, it's just that they're stuck with this clunker OS that they keep trying to patch up, in order to keep it proprietary.

You say about Microsoft though, you do realise 'Microsoft' is no longer an entity, but in fact a collection of completely individually managed and funded companies? One company makes Office and a lot of M$'s server software, another makes Windows, another (called Live Labs) manages all their social networking stuff and their gaming section obviously provides the XBox platform along with Vista games. They also have a hardware section I believe...

That software is really rather fantastic though. I wonder how they've managed to get the rendering side of things going, that's gonna be pretty valuable technology as far as gaming and GUI rendering goes. The image recognition tech is also pretty smart, although I'm not sure exactly how this would be implemented...

the only thing the pc has more than the mac is viruses and that's 100% down to the useless os that m$ have produced over the years

 no doubt you'll try the market share argument etc , but there's 20 million macs out there , and not a single one has ever got a virus , been hacked or got a worm whereas there's over 100,000 active windows viruses , do the math and you'll realise it's not just market share.. 

 also , if you really want to , you can install windows xp and vista and linux on your mac and run them all at the same time under leopard

try THAT on a dell !

It is actually, for developers and people who need apps which only run under Windows (of which there are very few).

I was really really surprised at the extent of software available for Macs. In fact, I'd go as far as saying there is more high quality freeware available for OS X than there is for Windows. Generally in Windows, what freeware is out there, is low quality and buggy, and will almost come loaded with spyware etc...

There is just such a MASSIVE amount of really good freeware available for OS X, it's unbelievable.

There are many, many, MANY software titles which are Mac only, a lot of which have no equivalent on PC, wheras any piece of PC software will at the bare minimum have an equivalent on the Mac platform.

So these folk have XP, Vista and Linux all running under OSX at the same time - please!

And, if I've understood correctly, generally all Windows freeware is crap whereas most OSX freeware is really good (other than those blamed below for causing issues in an otherwise issue free enviroment, obviously).

For the record - Is OSX better than Windows? - I've never used it but there are far too many that say yes (with none in the opposite camp) for it to be untrue. I therefore believe that OSX is a better, more modern, more intuitive system than windows.

Is windows as bad as some make out? - nowhere near. It is perfectly useable and stable if set up correctly - for the record the last virus I had was in win95 days.

I only ever pipe up every now and then to remind folk that the odd claim or two may be ever so slightly exaggerated.

Actually, developers have embraced the Mac OS and MacBooks (not the Pro version, but the white and black MacBooks) as ideal for developing multi-platform software. They can test their software against Unix, Linux, Windows and Mac on the same computer. The Mac OS is Unix fluent, which makes things a lot easier for them. So yes, you'll find a number of quite computer savvy people running various OS's on Macs.

I agree that it's way too prone to become a slinging match. I've stopped bothering, but I have taken the Guy Kawasaki oath. If someone asks for a recommendation, I always recommend Mac. In Guy's words: "I offer to help them out with a Windows computer three times; with a Mac as many times as they need. I know that they won't have much trouble with the Mac, but that I won't have patience for more than three assists on Windows." (Paraphrased)

Windows is performing quite reliably, but I can't help feeling sorry for the people who are stuck using it -- and that's my subjectivity showing.

Actually I've had two instances of Windows XP, an instance of React OS, an instance of Ubuntu and an instance of Damn Small Linux all running at the same time (yes, simultaneously) on my MBP.

I agree about the whole slinging match thing, but I still find the difference between Mac OS and Windows to be massive, even with Vista. My school is 100% PC based, although a lot of student's laptops are now Macs (thanks to me ). The number of issues we have with the computers is insane, usually just niggling little things such as projectors not working until we restart the machine, laptops taking ages to recognise USB keys (I still find it kinda funny when I insert a USB key in a Windoze machine and it says 'installing new hardware'. With my Mac, I plug it in and it just works.
