BS9000 Spins up and goes into Pause

Does anybody know how to clean the laser lens?  Sounds like this could be a solution?

I have  BS9000 with Beolab 8000 speakers and the second speaker output running to an amp that powers speakers elewhere in the house.  I just took the BS9000 off the wall from a vertical mount and laid it flat.  Now when I turn it on, it spins up on any disc and then goes into pause.  There doesn't seem to be any consistent pattern - sometimes it will play several songs, especially on disc 6, but it rarely will even start to play disc 1.  I re-set the drive for the flat position.  This started immediately when I repositioned the unit.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How old is your BS9000? Try cleaning the clear plastic tabs that stick out of the aluminum. Sometimes that can be an issue. I would suspect that your laser is going out and that moving it from the wall is coincidental. Not sure what else it would be, assuming same cds played fine before.

Thank you.  I've kept it clean and cleaned the tabs thoroughly, to no avail.  I'm going to put a call into B&O tech support support.  Coincidentally, I had an old B&O single disc system (with cassette and the sliding glass doors) and it did the exact same thing.

I don't mean to sound rude, but are you sure that you have correctly aligned the CD mechanism? It might be worth clicking through a few more calibrations to see if that makes a difference!

    Muchos Gracias Cool

Not rude at all.  Yes, I've tried all the settings and re-confirmed the setting for the flat position.

     Thank you.

Try cleaning the laser lens. I had this problem recently and cleaning the lens fixed it.

There was a TIB (not sure if its called that) that details an update for BS9000 models  with a similar problem that moved from vertical to flat. No idea why, mine was a MKII unit and it was easily fixed by service but it wouldn't work flat at all suffering the same problem you describe.

Could be another avenue to try.

... I wonder if there is another CD manufacturer in the world that would have to deal with the same senario..Unsure

    Good luck, Beoaus.

Wish I did. B&O Service did a test on ours found it was at about 40% strength and replaced it AU$550... Ouch...[:'(][:'(]

To be fair I guess that meant the laser was on the way out...

Depending on the age and use of your unit, that is probably a very temporary fix. There are "laser cleaning cds" available, not sure if they really work. You dont have much to lose at this point though. Hope it remedies your problem.

Start by downloading the service manual from the site. It includes CD test instructions and dismantling procedures.

To clean the len use the following procedure highlighted in the manual:-

  • Clean the lens of the laser pen. Use a cotton bud moistened with isopropyl alcohol (polycarbonate lens cleaner), and carefully clean the lens with circular movements.
  • Dry the lens with the dry end of the cotton bud. Due to the shape of the lens it may be very difficult to establish whether a lens is dirty; therefore always clean the lens when a product is in for service.

THIS PROBLEM WAS SOLVED BY SENDING MY SYSTEM IN FOR REPAIR.  THE SERVO BOARD AND LASER LENS HAD TO BE REPLACED.  $250 AND IT'S WORKING PERFECTLY.  THE GRAMAPHONE SHOP IN DENVER COLORADO WAS GREAT TO WORK WITH.

Just noticed this post and it's true.  My Mk II BS 9000 was making scraping noises when playing CD's (but it did play them without going into 'pause').  The fix was to adjust one of the positioning screws 90 degrees from its recommended position.  Hence, the optimal setting might not be the same as what the setup guide says.  You've got to play around with it.
