    Is my PC dead?

Need some help with my PC, I think it may be dead. After having my PC for well over 3 Years now. It was running slow to say the least. Someone suggested backing up all my files and reinstalling Windows XP. No problem I thought. Backed all the files I wanted to keep onto an External Hard Drive, I reinstalled Windows. This is where it all went a bit Pete Tong. As Windows was installing when it got to 34 Mins remaining it stopped. After a Coffee and *** break. It was still at 34 Mins. All I could do was pull the plug, it would not reset. Turned it back on and it resumed. Got to 34 Mins and stopped again. After several attempts it loaded. Then when it had finished I was left with a Desktop in the wrong size and no icons apart fron the Recycle Bin. Media Player will not work. Infact the programs are not there.

    Thanks in Advance CraigSmile

    Re: Is my PC dead?

    Oh dear, dear, dear.
sounds similar to what happened to me about a month ago.
I am pretty sure your stuff isn't lost though.
What I ended up doing, Craig is buying a small hard drive and installing it side by side with my corrupted drive.
I then put Windows on my new, small drive and once it was running, I could drag stuff from my old drive onto my new one.
The old drive is handy for extra storage now.

    Good luck mate.

    Re: Is my PC dead?

Hmmmm  . . .  sounds familiar, this past weekend in fact.

I had the same problem with a desktop PC of 5 year vintage. XP Pro Media Centre OS.

Copied everything to DVD, including the B&O Beoplayer, and music, photo, and video files for the Beoport. Changed the memory and HD which was relatively inexpensive. The reinstall took 37 minutes exactly, including the AVG reload.

But the Media Centre reload ( now at version 11 ) lost some DVD capability, which was corrected with video decoder upgrade downloads, and a newer download of Roxio Sonic Cineplayer. All of this took most of the weekend.

Looking back, I think I would add a 500 GB external HD for the files I copied onto DVD. Less cost and just a pull of the Firewire or USB to detach from the PC. I'm looking into adding the Porsche LaCie HD as we speak.

Comparing the Media Centre, MediaPlayer, and B&O Beoplayer today, I'll stick with B &O for general listening, as it just keeps on playing, album after album.

Well at least it went wrong after I had backed up my files. Transfered them to a 250GB External Hard Drive. they are now sat on my new PC. Just installed my BeoPort Software.
