Why does the beogram 6500 lift singles with small centre hole?

When I press play the platter starts to rotate and the record is raised by the centre adapter.

What is the purpose of this?

    Please enlighten me!

     Thanks Peter

It is actualy weighing the record! If it can lift it is assumes it is a 45rpm single and if it can't lift it it is a 33rpm LP

    Thank you.

Cool feature. I suspected it might be something like that.

The obvious follow-up question is then:

How can a single with large centre hole be distinguished from no record at all?

The central adapter has a lip on it which fits the large hole. It does not go all the way through so it will still weigh the record.

    Thank you.

After some digging in the crates I came up with a big hole 45rpm to test with.

I'm getting more and more fond of this piece of equipment.
