I am considering buying a BeoVision Avant 32 from a private buyer and would like some advice with regards to transporting the TV to its new home.

The seller does not have the original packaging and I only have a large estate car.

Is it OK to transport the TV face down on its screen with several duvets to protect the screen or should it only be transported upright.

All advice greatly appreciated...

Absolutely wonderful TV Richard.
I bought mine from Luton, three hours drive from Clitheroe.
I felt it well worth the £40 I spent on renting a transit to keep it upright and well strapped to the sides of the van.
I think you would struggle getting it in any estate car however large.

I have transported 32 Avants a couple of times flat on their faces with no damage although my heart was in my mouth all the time. Couldn't stand the stress nowadays so I hire a transit van for £45 a day and stand them up. Much safer as long as you strap them well!

There is plenty on room in the car (Mercedes E Class Estate).  Did you have the original packaging with yours?  If I buy new packaging from a dealer does anybody know how big it would be in its original packaging and whether it can be transported flat once packed?

I remember mine arriving and it is a big box! I doubt it would fit even in an E class and would strongly suggest that upright is the most sensible way. However the most important thing to take is someone else to help lift it!

The packaging is enormous and the set is strapped to a pallet within it. I doubt if it would go in any estate car, E class or otherwise.

It certainly wouldn't go in my discovery with the seats down.

And he did! I do remember the two service engineers struggling in with mine! I confess to not volunteering to help! Sorry boys!

When I used to own an Avant, I moved it myself four times. The first time I had packaging, the last three, none whatsoever. I'd move it upright, strap it tight, but making sure to put soft blankets around the top part of the television, especially the bezel around the screen. No straps should be in direct contact with the Avant. Put on your flashers (hazard lights) and go slow.

I've transported an Avant 32 over a distance of 60-odd miles in the back of my E-class - the hydraulic suspension will help a bit, and it'll fit with no problems (as long as it's not in its original packaging, I suspect that'd be a bit tight). If you can, take a few duvets / pillows / WHY to stuff under the middle. Avoid putting any weight on the speaker fret panel. Try to put a bit more under the screen frame as it doesn't quite lie flat with the base circle still on.

 And I might add, this is not my current Avant - I transported this one upright and now the tube is going! Maybe a long lie down is good for them   (although I doubt it)

 I might add, the other day I had a wardrobe in the back of my E-class... over 6' x about 4'.... I nearly haemorrhaged when I remembered the electric closer, just in time to watch it pull the rear window glass to within about 2mm of the corner of the wardrobe....

Transported an Avant  200 miles. I part inflated a LiLO in the back of the B Class and put the unit face down onto soft coverings to protect the finish from the LiLo fabric. Worked a treat.

The unit was loaded by B&O engineers who thought the idea was very useful and they left discussing using the same system.

Now that's something I hadn't thought of! I often think I should keep an inflatable bed in the back of the estate, but I don't think anyone'd believe it's for transporting TV's on...!!

So is that why your handle's Hovercrafter?

I seem to recall Tesco's used to have inflatable single mattresses quite cheap, I wonder if they still do... that would fit perfectly, cushion the TV (or whatever) perfectly, and pack away neatly.

When I have moved my BV3-32, and there have been a few times. It has always gone Screen down on a large Duvet. Never had any problems.

To resurrect this thread... I'm hoping to pick up a 28" RFT VCR Avant shortly, and plan to carry it face down in the back of a Citroen Xantia. I've seen to comments above about using duvets. My plan is to use sleeping bags plus some armchair cushions. 1. I assume that the majority of the weight is in the tube. Should the weight be taken on the tube face, or the surround? 2. To avoid breaking the back window of the car, it would be nice to remove the base. Should the disk base be removed for transportation? If so, then how do I do this? 3. Can the front panel below the VCR slot take weight? 4. If I'm carrying a chest of drawers, I put it against the back of the car, and use the ledge above the bumper as a pivot. Since this will line up with the bottom of the screen, or the speaker grill, this does not seem practical for an Avant. How do I get the thing in the car in the first place? Sorry for so many questions, but I'd like to get this right! Mark

My Avant traveled 2300 miles between Washington, DC and Phoenix Arizona upright, in a truck, surrounded by blankets and two mattresses. I actually purchased the box, but never used it as it had to be assembled and would have resulted in an absolutely HUGE package.

It survived the trip without a problem.
 

I've transported Avants several times.

The original packaging with the pallet doesn't even fit in a van like a Mits L400 or Merc Vito.

So an E-type definitly does't handle the packaging.

My choice would be transporting upright and take 2 wooden blocks for the bottom. So the motorbase gets free from the floor.

Transporting upright could damaging the motorbase, even if you'll strap it tidy. The bearings from the motorbase are to vulnerable.

If you're planning to transport it horizontal, make sure its faced down. But again, its not my choice. I know stories about chassis that were broken after transport at destination.
