    Beolab2

This is a real dumbo of a question but if you don't ask you don't learn. I am considering my next move in terms of B&O purchase and am considering a sub-woofer. Can I ask if this is only used during Dolby transmission or do I get the benefit of it on my audio (pair of 8000 going through the Dolby unit on the 6-26). I can probably justify it if I get general benefit out of it but my use of DVDs is not heavy enough to spend that amount of dosh.

I did say it was a dumbo question.

I have BL3 and BL2. I must say that in the beginning I felt it was too boomy for music. But after finding a decent level for the Subwoofer (set in the TV, using the dolby digital module), the BL2 contributing VERY positively to my music experience.

    I wouldnt live without.

But in my case it was needed to lower the subwoofer level quite significantly from the factory setting. I'd say to about half the factory level.

Well Barry......thanks for your "dumbo question" Actually I had the same question, also considering to buy a BL2 for music.

Think I'll try to lent one and just try it at home.

I've had a BL2 since just before last Christmas and up until recently I didn't use it with music,  however now having adjusted it's level I find it adds to the music.

Probably one of the best B&O purchases I have made and I wouldn't want to be without it now.

Agree - I love mine and equally regard it as one of the best items of B&O that I have bought. Stunning with DVDs but definitely adds to music in my opinion.

Agree as well, I think the BL2 really improves also music performance. I also think the match with the bl8000 is really good.

And of course your movies will never be the same anymore!

All votes in favour then! Do I pick up a small addendum in that you may have to "tune" the BL2 down for music and up for movies? I am not one of these bass and treble merchants and like to have a nice mid-range. The BL8000 do the treble --midrange fine with nice clarity but they are a little light on the bass.

Thanks to all for the info. Final question would you prefer a BL2 to a pair of rears?

What in your opinion is the optimal level for the bass and subwoofer positions in the sound adjustment menu (for music I use BL 8000 and BL2 connected to a BV7)? Do I need to increase the bass level for BL8000 at all if I have a BL2?

    Re: Beolab2

I have a small room. Since fitting the Lab2 I found the 8000's bass too much as well and had to reduce both the 8000 & lab2's bass by minus 3 in the Avants' settings otherwise during DVD movies & some CD's the volume became uncomfortable.

I thought when adding a sub the bass frequencies would have been transfered from the main speakers to the sub. I guess I was wrong.

    >>I thought when adding a sub the bass frequencies would have been transfered from the main speakers to the sub<<

I don't know what happens if you use the sub connnected to the surround module. But I have the Lab 2 with Lab3, the BS9000 is connected to lab 2 via single powerlink cable, from there the cables go to the left and right lab 3 speaker. The bass frequencies are definitly transfered from the main speakers, no dount about that.

For the question if rear or sub is more important, it is definitly the sub unless you have BL9 or BL5.

I can't say often enough how much I love the lab3/lab 2 combination. I don't think it is too boomy, you can djust the sub, also to position it right has major impact. For me that was the perfect compromise of price tag/performance. I found many CDs I listen too do not really live up to high end speaker.

    Cheers

Interesting! We are nearly there with an understanding of this but not quite. There is an issue over boominess (terrible word really but appropriate) and am I right in thinking that there may be a difference between set ups through a music system only and through the Dolby unit in the TV. I will be doing the latter so it reads like I have to take the bass off the 8000 and subdue the sub-woofer a little.

My room is not  large but not small (about 18ft by 13ft) and my music preference is towards the top end of the scale. Vocals and violin are important in my diet of music. I do not like what I refer to as injected bass music so any use of the bass has to be subtle and appropriate.

    Re: Beolab2

Well then trying a BL2 in your setup will be good, as you can make as many adjustments as you need to. I tried the BL2 but it was connected to the CD player, so the 4000's lost one of their best attributes when listening to music - excellent balance between all frequencies. I assume that you have so far enjoyed the timbre of the 8000's on the vocal and strings front?

I think you will be able to find a great balance between the sub and the 8000's through the DSS and the settings for the speakers. Smile Let us know how you go with it!

    Re: Beolab2

See if your dealer will allow you to try one at home.

I added a BL2 to my BL8000 which are connected to a DVD Avant.  I listen to a lot of music and trialled the BL2 at home to make sure that I was completely happy with it added to my setup.

IMHO It really made a big different to all types of music and found that instruments in classical music were clearer.  When you add a BL2 the lower frequencies don’t go the other speakers freeing the BL8000’s to work with less range and they seem to become clearer

It did take a little while to get the system sounding how I liked it which isn’t ‘to boomey’.

    Hello,

I added too a BL2 to my setup (BV Avant, BL8000, BL4000). It was the only missing part (5.1).

The BL2 really helps to reach a logical sound repartition in a dolby digital configuration.

The added value in my case concerns the watching of a DVD. The incredible bass will not denature the audio-track or the movie unless the subwoofer has been correctly parameterized before.

In my case, I tested several areas in my living room before I found the most acceptable place to put the BL2.

One of my BEST purchase with the BL8000.

Well, start with Beolab 9, live with them for a few weeks, get to know them.

It will then be completely up to you to try the BL2 and deliberate whether or not it will be a suitable addition to your setup.

What!? BeoLab 5s or BeoLab 9s? I would have 5s any day over 9s unless I was really pushed for a more discreet design or cash.

I'd personally never add a BeoLab 2 to the 9s. All you're going to do is degrade the sound, the performance from the 9's 'subs' is better than that of the BeoLab 2 (although the 2 goes louder).

    Re: Beolab2

britops - have you connected your audio PL first into your BL2 and then linked your BL 8000's PL (power link) directly from your BL2 - there is a filter to my understanding inside the BL2 that reduce the bass frequenzy into connected speakers.....

Had the same problem before but then wired differently with a big difference

Grant me the serenity to accept the B&O I can't afford

No I have separate powerlinks for each speaker and sub from the back of the Avant. Thank for the advice I will try what you say.

Can anyone else confirm the filter?

Now I am totally confused! As David quite rightly proposed I do love the timbre of my BL8000's and want to enhance them and not detract from them. Because of my room set up everything goes through the Dolby unit of the 6-26. Is the bass on the speakers going to cut out in favour of the BL2 or is the BL2 going to add to the bass.

I must stress that I am not into "injected" bass music but would like the bass range of the 8000's to improve. In order to justify this purchase I must use it for music as my use of DVD is limited.

    Re: Beolab2

We have had our Lab 2 for over a year now and would never get rid of it. We have a BV-7 with Lab 3 front and Lab 4 rear...and both films and music simply don't sound as good when the Lab 2 is not switched on...there is a massive difference!

Buy a sub before you invest in rear speakers...we use the rear speakers sometimes when listening to music at lowish volumes on Speaker 4 and for when watching 5.1 dvds everytime. When watching tv we only ever watch it on just the Lab 7.1 centre speaker or on Speaker 3 for tv films...so basically the rear speakers do not get used that much compared to the front speakers and sub.

As for settings...we leave everything at the standard factory settings...we have 'Loudness' turned on...and i have the sub set on the 'Corner' setting which gives the least bass of the three settings that it has on the back of it (freestanding, wall or corner iirc).

Buy one...you will not regret it!
