Couple of PC problems, help needed.

Mods, would you be kind enough to leave this on the general forum, just for a couple of days 'til I'm sorted, thanks.

I have just put a new hard-drive in my PC and installed Windows XP. I have numerous issues to sort out yet and wonder if any one can help me.

1 Posts on this forum are bigger than the window they appear in and therefore have a slide bar across the bottom.
I have to slide back and fore to read every line (a pain in the backside). I have tried making the font smaller but that just makes titchy-witchy text with huge line spaces and the post still doesn't fit in the window.

2 The keyboard has changed!   @ now appears over the 2 button  and where it used to be is "
I cannot find the button for UK pound sign. This is my top line with the upper-case button held down.

               !   @   #   $   %   ^   &   *   (   )   _   +

I also have problems with Beolink PC2 and Win TV but they can wait.

Much more like a Mac keyboard! I think this may be the american default. I am afraid I am pretty useless at PCs - in a Mac there is a simple icon to click on at the top - I have it set to English with the option of Danish for special letters! Had a quick search round my PC but the poor thing is a bit disabled!!

    Re Keyboard problem -

    Go to "Start", then

    "Settings", "Control Panel".

    Select "Regional and Language Options".

    Select the "Language" tab.

    Select the "Details" button.

Make sure "English (United Kingdom)" is set as the default input language.

In the "Installed Services" window "United Kingdom" should be in bold letters as the installed keyboard, if not add from add box.

All of the above assumes the language bar is not visible on the task bar (bottom of screen). If you can see "EN" near the right hand side of the task bar then select this and pick UK keyboard rather than US.

     Easy peasey!

Anyhoo, welcome back and sharpen your UK keyboard for tomorrow night :)

    Dear Jandyt,

If the @ appears over the 2, than You have selected the default US keyboard. You need to replace it with the english keyboard.

To do this, first You have to go the Start->Control Panel->Regional and language settings.

In here check the "Languages" tab, and click on "details".

Here You can "add" the Languages, and the keyboard.

Please select the English, or English extended keyboard, I think it will solve Your keyboard problem.

The other problem used to be strange in this way. Which browser is installed on Your PC?

    Did You downloaded all upgrades?

Did You checked the "ignore font sizes from web pages" int "Tools->Internet options" menu, in the "accessibility" button menu? (Without it, only some font size will change, but not all!)

Hope it will help You :)

If it's not allowed to answer this kind of questions on the main board, please feel free to ask it ifrom me in a private mail :)

    Keyboard problem sorted!

Gosh, I'm so thick sometimes it frightens me!

As for the fitting in a window problem, Ignore  font sizes didn't fix it but made all text huge.
I have set text to smallest and it is still pretty big.

After a useless start I did find the control panel bit! I have stripped out this PC as I only use it for scanning now! I think I stripped it a bit far!!

Re: Couple of PC problems, help needed.

Daft question but - What type and size is your monitor and have you adjusted your display setting accordingly??

For a 15" CRT req'd settings are likely to be 800x600

17" CRT 1024 x 768. If you need to change - right click anywhere on desktop, select "properites" and then selct "settings" tab. Adjust the "screen resolution" slider as appropriate.

For LCD monitors they will generally have a preferred resolution but this is much more likely to be detected correctly by windows.

Have you tried altering the display properties - right click on the desk top - Properties - Settings and then slide the slider all the way to the right.

While we've got PC problems on the General Forum, i was wondering if i could ask a question?

About a year ago i somehow had an attack and picked up a virus, i ran AVG and quarantined it. And no longer have any problems except, every time i turn on my laptop PC and everything is starting up i always get the Local Disc page come on. I dont have any other problems with the laptop, but i dont know how to stop these files from appearing on start up.

    Any ideas?

    AHA!!!!Idea

I might be able to help here. If it blows up, I take no responsibility!
    Press 'Start" then 'run'
In the dialog box type   msconfig   then OK
Under the tab 'Startup'  uncheck the offending item.

    Hope this helps.
