Please don't try this at home!!!

Now I'm not sure, but I would imagine that the glue bonding the fabric to the frame is probably water-based.
I filled the sink up four inches deep with warm water and added a dash of Angastora bitters Fairy liquid.
With nail brush at the ready, I quickly dunked the first one and scrubbed manically, all over, back and front then whipped it out of the water.
Shook it vigorously and then got the hair-dryier on it before the glue dissolved. It was only in water for about twelve seconds.
Did the same with the other three.

I washed my speaker frets as well from a pair of S55's. Can't remember how long they were in the water but I didn't rush!! They came out so nice and clean afterwards!

Yes, handwarm water, no more or you will risk shrinking the cloths, combined with the cheapest hairshampoo you can find.
Shower the frets with water,
Rub the shampoo in gently using your hands and let it work for a couple of minutes,
Scrub gently using a nailbrush if you have some stubborn dirt (gently !),
Shower the frets using handwarm water 'till all of the shampoo has come off.
Leave to airdry, please no hairdryer. The hairdryer will be fine for some types of cloth but not for all and you won't know before it's too late.

Especially some of the Beovox Uniphase series (S22-S45) where at least two different types of cloth has been used seems to be prone to shrinkage caused by excess heat, sometimes towards the extreme (impossible to mount back onto the cabinet!).

I never saw any speaker cloth glue dissolve in water but of course it shouldn't be left to soak for hours.

Once clean and dry, it was quite easy to sort out the splayed out one.
A dot of superglue on each of the four places where it was snapped.
As for the bent bit, a doddle! I just held it at the edge of the curved kitchen work-top and a few short taps with the wooden handle of a pin hammer and it was soon flat and level.
Now for the locating pin-thingys
I managed to find some wall-plugs that were a fairly tight fit in the holes on the enclosures.
I cut one down to the same height as the surviving pegs and found a thin screw which would reach through the wall plug, and a little more.
I then held a pointy bradall in the flame on the gas hob and immediately melted a small pin-*** hole through the center of the cut off locating pin.
Just before screwing it tight I put a small drop of super glue in the hole and on the cut-off wall-plug then screwed it home.

It worked wonderfully so I repeated the procedure with the other two.

All that remained was to introduce the frets to the speakers.
Unbelievably, they just slotted into place as if they were new frets!|
That's it, job done!

I made up a couple of speaker cables with two sockets donated by Craig and two plugs I bought from Maplins.
This was about 3.30 this afternoon (Mon) and I was just about to plug them into my Beomaster 7000 when my son and his fiance arrived for a brew.
Well, I sat them on the settee and connected up the speakers.
Most of you will already have guessed which DVD I put on the Kikinoko DVD player!
I muted the Avant speakers and set the 7000  to volume 36 with my newly refurbished S120s.
I scrolled through to Hotel California and pressed play.............

......then the doorbell rang, and it was the local Vicar come round for a cup of tea and a chat - so you muted it..

And after discussing the local community centre, the knitting circle, and the problem with teenagers hanging around outside the local 7-11 all night he left and you then got back to pressing play.. and...

 

.......and, Ohh! The sweetness of the air!

A warm glow swept over me as the introductory trumpet solo played. I gradually incresed the volume to 50 and the kids turned and looked at each other.
What a nice pure sound. Sharp and clear with no vibrations or dead spots.
I had done this!
As the trumpet faded away and the guitars started, I got the goose-pimples just like I had that day in Frede's house in Venø, near Struer.
It's hard to believe these are passive speakers.
I feel really proud of my handywork and glad I took them on.
Near the end of the track, where there is a guitar duet, I threw all caution to the wind and cranked up the volume to max, 78.
The whole room was vibrating, my sons eyes nearly popped out! The speakers handled it well and supprisingly didn't cut out.

Excellent thread and an excellent job - very well done Andy.

I know exactly how you feel though. The 1st speakers I ever refoamed were S55's and I too was totally gobsmacked that my efforts were equally successful. It has inspired me to carry on refurbishing other speakers in the B&O range with the knowledge that anything is possible with a little patience and planning.

A great thread - well done! I love to see other simple people like me, taking the initiative and making the effort to do the job well (and succeeding, to boot), instead of farming out work to local technicians who can't be bothered to care about professionalism any more!

I'm starting on my 4 S45's in a few days to replace the Crossover capacitors. I just got the new Auricaps in the mail yesterday. I'll post that project also.

 

What an absolutely fantastic superb thread Andy. Your use of plain English and good photos is an example to us all. As a fan of older B&O, threads like these are what makes this site special (and easily worth the £30 for gold membership - never mind the monthly draw !) for me. The thrill of rescuing and refurbishing an item like these speakers to the standard that you've achieved is something that should be experienced by everyone !

What was that Olympus device in the pics ?

There must be a similar product available to day to the scratch remover you've got - the results look amazing. Can anyone suggest anything ? 

Can Dillen give us more information & photos about shims, spiders, where to purchase the best quality foam surrounds etc, so us lesser mortals can be educated in the ways of repairing the trickier models.

 Great read. My pair of Beovox M150 has no foamrot but the cabinets have a few scratches and some of the fret plugs broken.

I learned a few important things here so thank you.

A thin covering  of teak oil covered a mulitude of sins on my S45-2's. I wouldn't say the scratches disappeared, but you only notice them when you look closely.
