Rating system for every user - possible on this forum ?
Hello all, just an idea. I have seen some forums with a rating system for their members. For example to rate a user who has been helpful to solve a technical problem. The count of answers doens't always rate a user for his/her knowledge of B&O stuff. This rating system might be usefull for new users. What do you think about this ? Is it possible on the forum. Considering the rather childish behaviour of some of the members I would strongly suggest not to implement a rating system for members.

Re: Rating system for every user - possible on this forum ?
I feel the behaviour on this forum is actually much much better than other forums I visit.
Maybe a rating system for people with post counts higher than 100? That way we can be sure that people won't get shot down before they get a grip on what the forum is really like.

Re: Rating system for every user - possible on this forum ?
Alex, this is the same feeling I have about our forum members. The behavior here is the best I've ever seen on a forum. I met some people of our forum in Struer and I can only write positive things about them. Never realized any childish behavior - except they were drunken 100 post counts seems to be a good number even if I'm alot of posts away from this. I think we need Lee's opinion. Perhaps the whole thing isn't possible on this forum so we don't have to talk any longer about it. Martin

I fail to see what such a system would add - giving points for correctly answering a question dosen't mean they are any more qualified to answer the next on what may be a completely different subject. I believe that Beoworld has always strived to avoid any of the flaws and pitfalls of other forums and the lack of any "grading" system is (I believe) entirely intentional to prevent any sense of elitism or "supermember" (no crude jokes please)! It only takes a short while to recognise frequent posters and a little while longer to determine those that "know".
Generally speaking, you aren't learning much if your lips are moving.

I think the members on here are some of the best behaved anywhere on the net! Very polite and extremely helpful. We did think about a rating system but felt it smacked somewhat of elitism and that although it had some attractions, it also had pitfalls. Most of us recognise who knows what and will often refer members to individuals who can help. We did use the technical adviser role for this a bit but, to be honest, there are so many who could qualify for this that it seems a bit redundant!

I think Peter just summed up by my own thoughts and that of the moderating team as a whole. Although it's a good suggestion (thank you Martin), we felt that a grading system would indeed alienate some people. We all learn as we go along, and i'd say i didn't give any real advice until i had made about 500 posts! (i'm a slow learner okay.. ) However, once i was knowledgable and confident enough to jump in and answer, i would have had a pretty useless rating - so would my answer have been taken seriously? Only a thought - but i think anyone visiting the forums enough can see who knows what's what! Lee

Hmmmm. I have made many posts on here and out of all those posts, I guess I have offered genuine helpful comments just a handful of times. Many of my posts have been to share pleasurable experiences and make others welcome. Some of my posts may be described as childish I suppose (especially on a Wednesday) but hey, life's too short to be miserable and straight laced all the time. Looking at other forums, there is absolutely no comparison to this one, a nicer bunch of folk would be hard to find! We are so diverse and have dfferent viewpoints and personalities and this is what makes Beoworld so great. Variety is the spice of life! I wonder, muntbeoman, have you ever done anything childish? You could say that you are now the proud owner of a BS7000 system precisely because you are often childish on this site

I am quite certain that no-one was criticising you Andy! Your recent thread regarding Struer was one of the best we have had for ages and you regularly add positively to threads. A little frivolity is good for the site as we don't want the site to be staid and boring! I moderate any real excesses and I have not done any of that for longer than I can remember.

If I said how useful your posts were, would you buy me alcohol as well?
But seriously, I think muntbeoman needs to experience some other large(ish) forums to see just how excellent BeoWorld is for having grown up members.
Now where's my rattle?

Bad move if you ask me - keep it simple and to echo what many have said this is one of the best forums out there and certainly has been for a long time.

Re: Rating system for every user - possible on this forum ?
I was indeed not talking of Andy when I referred to some childishness on the forum. Particularly on the Dutch forum there are some people who feel that they should give other members a hard time just because they think differently. Some fun here and there is not what I cald childishness.
