Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a pre-loved Beotalk 1401 base, to go along with my 1401 handset, and it's a fantastic design i love it. I have tried to install it but I think I am missing a part..

The instruction manual says to plug the answering machine cable into the "ANS Socket" of the 'Adapter plug', and the telephone into the "TEL Socket", then finally to the wall phone socket.  

As it is pre-loved, this adapter didn't come with the machine so I have tried using a connector made by other brands in place of the original part (an RJ11 double adapter).

The answering machine doesn't funcion as it says it should in the manual. I don't know whether it is because I am missing this part, or simply because I was sold a faulty beotalk. :'(

Something else I have noted, is that when pressing the  buttons on the answering machine, the sound that is heard is a click rather than a beep as i would've expected.  I don't know whether this would help anyone in helping diagnose this problem for me.

 

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! :)

I am having a similar issue. I suspect with mine it is a wiring issue  since I also don´t have this adapter. I can get the base to work by recording a message etc but although it will pick up and the correct number of rings it doesn´t play the welcome message and just hangs up after a couple of beeps.

I´m still experimenting if I find anything out I´ll let you know.

Cheers Kevin, mine doesn't even record an answer or beep, so i hope Bang & Olufsen will be able to repair it, as it sounds like mine is broken and it is not the adapter thats stopping it from working! Have you been able to ask B&O to supply the right adapter for you?

I wonder what would have caused the malfunction in mine? The base is as solid as a rock! I tried opening it up but i didn't want to break it, and there aren't any service manuals for it that i can find to help me.

In terms of repair I would say from looking at it it´s a case of a board swap. There are two and it´s all surface mount miniature stuff. As to taking it apart it´s quite ingenious, the aluminium section is in two parts and with gentle force unclip at the front and rear edge respectively. The two plastic sections slide away from each other, the larger section comes to a stop and like the metal section unclips. However if your going to take it in then I would leave it as it is.

I struggled to understand your post, what is a board swap? Sorry i'm a bit slow! 

Ah i'll leave it in one piece and send it in to see what can be done to repair it.

Yes the front one requires just that little bit more pushing so to speak.

By board swap I meant that the service people will probably just change the pcb  rather than repair a faulty component on the pcb since it´s all miniaturized components on them. A quicker and easier job of repairing the unit and since there are only two boards in there it shouldn´t take them long if they are still available.

Hehe i didn't have the muscles to remove the front piece so i gave up and put it back together. 

Oh dear, yes because when i spoke to the dealer he said it will be fine if it's just a fix, but if it's a part that needs to be ordered in, there may be a problem. I'll be crossing my fingers. Thanks Kevin
