    S-55 woofer reconing/refoaming service reccommendations

Hi, I have a pair of S-55s that need to have the woofers refoamed. I thought about buying a kit and doing it myself, but I'd rather spend a few extra bucks and have it done right by a reputable shop. Any places or websites in the USA anyone could recommend? Any companies you'd suggest avoiding?

This is my first post, and I think this site is fantastic. Great resources! I currently own a Beomaster 2400, Beogram RX, S-55s, and a Beocenter 2200, all of which I plan on refurbishing over time, so I'm looking forward to getting input and advice from the Forum.

    Thanks!

I know a very good company, but they are based in the Netherlands. But I am sure there are some refoam companies in the USA. Have you tried Google?

Refoaming is not difficult - just doubled my lifetime total to eight this week.  In fact, I'm listening to a pair of refoamed speakers as I type this.  I'd say give it a go.

Regarding a "reputable shop" in the States:  I've never used a pro to refoam loudspeakers.  However:

Meniscus advertises this service and I've bought many items from Mark recently, and have done business with him as long ago as 1987.

Madisound is a reputable company that may be able to repair, and they maintain a list of other repairers (including Meniscus).  I have bought their subwoofer drivers in the past.

Another option is Atlantic Systems.  They are a B&O repair shop.  I don't know if they do refoams or not.  I suspect they do, and I've heard good things about them though I've not used them.

Lastly, if I ever did want to use a pro, the first person I'd contact would be Benny Amina of Modular Electronics.  So far, Benny has repaired a Denon preamplifier, two B&O receivers, and a B&O turntable for me.  I could not recommend Benny any higher.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck and welcome to the site!

    Current primary listening:  SMMC20EN -> BG4002 -> BM4000 -> Beovox M70

    Welcome to Beoworld rick48.

While you're at it I would recommend replacing the capacitors in the crossovers, it will make a very noticable difference.

Don't bother connecting these to your Becenter 2200, they will be wasted on it. The BC2200 is simply a reboxed Sony with a quite nice B&O turntable section bolted on. The speakers originally supplied with the BC2200 were X25's which are truly awful speakers (for B&O). I would recommend some Redline RL45.2's instead, they seem to work really well with this center.

    Chris.

The use of metaphors should be avoided like the plague. They're like a red rag to a bull to me.

Thanks for all the input, guys, it's much appreciated! Smile

I know this is a really good forum when I'm getting answers to questions I haven't even asked yet, like Chris' speaker recommendation for the 2200 Wink. I think a set of RL45.2s (or RL2000s?) will definitely be next on my wish list, thanks Chris...oh, and a pair of stands for my Beovox S55s, if anyone knows where to find them.

    Thanks again!!
