    Just bought a Beolab 5000

    Hi,

After the Beomasters 6000, 8000 and 4400, I finally found a Beolab 5000 amplifier, sans Beomaster, working with intact lettering. Smile

A nice project I guess! I suppose some work will still be required, and my pockets aren't deep enough to send it over to Frede!

    Yes, pictures will come!!

    Congratulations! Smile

That could give me the motivation to start work on mine as well. It sounds pretty decent as is so I've never even looked inside, but it sometimes makes "pop" sounds while warming up, so I'm sure there are at least some bad solders somewhere.

I'm far too cheap for a Frede job and I wouldn't enjoy it half as much if I hadn't restored it myself, so... now only to find some desk space somewhere Laughing

Yes - I'm sure it would be good to have another pair of eyes, so to speak!

I still have the set in storage at work though, and the weather seems like I'm not going to start my car until next week... I might start over there and bring it home later, though Smile

Re: Just bought a Beolab 5000

I recently experienced one of these wonderful amps Jacques, and they are gorgeous! Really punchy low end is how the owner described it and he was right! We compared against a Beomaster 3000-2 on phono and the 5000 was clearerin the top end too! The potentiometers are easy to pull apart and clean, just watch out for those little springs and make sure they go back together the same way!

Hmm, there wasn't really anything I could do to the one I saw apart from replace the amp trimmers and give it a checkup. The caps I spot checked were fine.

Oh I am not sure if there is some asbestos inside these units between the main PSU cap and the transformer though so please be cautious there!

I am sure Martin will have the lamps (not to mention lots of invaluable advice as usual!) which are not exactly common - 60v 5w MES types! I got mine from a lamp specialist in the UK.

Lovely amps which I myself have overlooked in the past. I will probably be on the lookout for one myself now :)

    Olly.

Re: Just bought a Beolab 5000

    A few piccies...

As you can see, there are a few things to do. How do you get rid of those tuner feet imprints?

There are a couple of missing screws underneath, and a few rusty ones that won't do. Does Frede make a screw kit? Big Smile Maybe he does, maybe he does...

The unit is in full working order.

Now I need the matching tuner (in rosewood)... Damn.

New photos when I open it!

Well Leslie, tell me more... Laughing

By the way, I'm listening to the Köln Concert on my Beocord 5000/4715 right now. I've rarely heard such beautiful piano from cassette... Who said this machine was junk? Really?

So have you auditioned it yet? Let us know what you think Jacques!

Regards the 'asbestos', if you really need to disturb then maybe worth spraying with a little bit of water (very carefully) if you are worried?

That is amazing Leslie! Did you have made up or did you do all the plastic work yourself?

Nice looking 5000 - I like the rosewood ones as well. To get the tuner marks off, clean the rosewood - I use linseed oil and white spirit - and then use beeswax to get the beautiful colour back. Definitely get the tuner - best radio I have! The amplifier is quite lively in my experience - it has what sounds like a treble lift though the figures would say not.

Re: Just bought a Beolab 5000

Thanks for the tip Peter. No sanding required then? Smile

I will get the tuner. But the few I've seen didn't look very nice at all, and they were oak or teak. But there is some hope, eh? Wink

I don't mind lively amplifiers. And a bit of treble lift is just what I need at my age! Sad

All my Beomasters have treble cranked up a bit anyway...

Tim thinks this was deliberate because the speakers of the day needed the treble and bass lifts. He wrote an interesting article in last month's Hi-Fi World, which you have probably read.

So how does the combination of white spirit and linseed oil work? Do you use the spirit first then apply the oil?

You mix the two together and apply either with a cloth or fine wire wool. Obviously take the top off first!! Work along the grain and it gets rid of all the dirt quickly.
