Suitable subwoofer for use with Beolab 6000

    Hello there,

I was wondering if someone could help me by advising me on what subwoofer to get that would work well in partnership with my beolab 6000s and beosound ouverture? I cant afford a b&o sub so it will have to be another brand, i have the powerlink to rca lead suitable for it.

I am considering the mordaunt short alumni 9 as it has nice looks and would suit the b&o. Has anone got any other suggestions, i want the sub to work well with not only movies but also music, so the subwoofer cant be slow, plus i would like it to look nice too, also i have a tight budget around the £100-£200 mark.

I can pick up the mordaunt short alumni 9 for £119 from richer sounds in the uk.

Is the ms a good idea or is there something better i can but with my money?

Your help will be much appreciated

    Thanks in advance!

It is a pity your budget can't stretch to a BeoLab 11.

I have one, and it makes a hugh difference to my BeoLab 6000s.

This is because the BeoLab 11 has a powerlink daisy-chain that puts it ahead of the BeoLab 6000s, thus taking the bass notes "heavy lifting" strain off of the 6000s' drivers.

What source (BS device) will you be using to drive the subwoofer and the BeoLab 6000s ?

First B&O (1976) was a Beogram 1500 ... latest (2011) change has been to couple the BL11 with the BL6Ks *sounds superb*

Re: Suitable subwoofer for use with Beolab 6000

We moved from The Netherlands to Hong Kong and therefore I had to change my setup since apartments here are smaller. I used to have Beolab 1 as fronts and Beolab 6000 as rears connected to a Beovision 7-40. I sold the Beolab 1's & the Beovision 7-40 in Holland and took the Beolab 6000's and a pair of Beolab 4000's that I had in the bedroom to Hong Kong. I bought a new Beovision 10-40 here and now have the Beolab 6000's as fronts and the Beolab 4000's as rears.

I was missing something in the sound, so to add extra bass, I bought a Beolab11 as subwoofer. What a massive difference! The sound is much fuller and richer and I never thought that my old speakers could sound so good! The Beolab11 seems to take away most of the bass from the Beolab 6000's an the Beolab 4000's, allowing them to work much better on the midrange and high end of the sound spectrum. If you have the time and patience, just wait and save up for a new Beolab 11, or see if a used or demo model shows up for a better price. Check out the AV Lifestyle website, I think they already have had one or two used ones for sale a few months ago. For some reason the Beolab 11 and Beolab 6000/Beolab 4000 seem to made for each other. I once had a Beolab2 for a week from my dealer in Holland, but that was just too strong in my opinion. It would be a shame not to hear what a difference a Beolab11 can make. Maybe you can ask a B&O dealer to give you one for a few days to hear for yourself? Apart from the sound, the Beolab11 also looks beautiful with the Beolab 6000!

its a shame i cant afford the beolab 11 at the moment as the looks are nice aswell.

I am using a beosound ouverture for the 6000s an will use the powerlink to rca cable from one of the powerlink outs on the 6000s to the sub.

I understand ... however you will not get the "offloading" effect that Beolab1 and I described.

In fact, your BeoLab 6000s will continue to struggle to play the bass that is also going to be played by the non-B&O subwoofer you are asking for.

    Hi Ronnie,

I appreciate your seeking advice on a subwoofer to add to your set-up. I dont know much about subs - both B&O or other brands, but according to others that have replied, the consensus seems to be - you need a B&O sub for the sound to be correct with your BL6000's.

    Here's my alternative suggestion.

I know BL6000's myself as I had an early pair between 1994 - 2005. They are ok, but a bit bass light when used alone & I can understand why you want to add a subwoofer to boost the lower end.

A cheaper alternative to spending £1,200 on a BL2 or a BL11 - find a nice pair of Beolab Penta III's (or II's), use these as your front speakers, adjust the bass levels both on the Penta's and on ur Ouverture as required, use your BL6000's as your rears. I love Penta's, they are a powerful and 'deep & full' sounding speaker, as you can read in many threads on this forum. A surround setup like this would sound great I think, and having experience of BL6000~only sound vs. Penta sound, I can assure you a set-up combining both pairs would sound 10 times better, and the bass power particularly would be greatly increased.

You would also get the lcd source display on the Penta's, and of course get an overall better sound through 2xPenta's and 2xBL6000's as opposed to only BL6000's sound.

I appreciate this is not a dedicated subwoofer in any way - but I'll bet the overall sound would become much, much better & significantly more bass-powerful due to the Penta's.

You can find Penta II or III on ebay for £500-600. Although this is still over your current budget, it's a lot more achievable for you than trying to save £1,200....

Thats fine and solid advice. I'm not going to argue with that at all.

My personal opinion however, is that a 2xPenta/2x6000 set up I would prefer more than a 2x6000/1lab 2 set up.

I personally think that the overall sound (incl. increased bass power) would be better and perhaps more importantly is approximately half the cost. Particularly important if you're a young chap like Ronnie - £1,200 is an awful lot of money.

As I say, this is only my opinion too!! Big Smile

Beolab 2 is a dream unfortunately, so it will have to be a non b&o sub unfortunately

    Hi Ronnie,

Everything said above is all true...but reality is reality and if you cannot (yet) afford a B&O sub, then my advice is to go woth the Mordaunt short...Their  "Performance" and "Mezzo" range are also good options. Ive listened to various subs including BIC American and Elemental and while they are good, I like the Mordaunt styling better and I think it will fit in better.

If I were in your shoes, I'd go with the MS and start saving for a B&O ...you can then ebay your MS when you eventually get your B&O sub.

Im 50, and it took me literally decades to gert my hands on (and more importantly, to be able to afford!!!)  my current set-up, so dont be too worried if you cannot get it all at once!

Re: Suitable subwoofer for use with Beolab 6000

I had to make the same decission as you some years ago. The only difference was that the Beolab 11 wasn't available at that time, so Beolab 2 was the only choice.

For me Beolab 2 was far too expensive. I bought a cheap non-B&O active subwoofer, put it behind a curtain that nobody sees it and connected it to my system. Of course, a non-B&O subwoofer is not the same as BL11 or BL2, but it's a start to improve bass on your setup.

Last year in November, when I was able afford it, I bought the Beolab 11. Got a good price from my dealer for the silver one so I could not resist Big Smile

So start with a cheap sub and save money for the BL11. You won't be disappointed by the BL11. In my opinion BL11 is the perfect match for a set of BL6000.

The only one left at richer sounds was faulty, so i went to superfi website and bought the Q acoustics 2070s in glossy white, ordered it 10pm on tuesday, arrived at half 8 this morning, just plugged it in and it sounds great in combination with my system, ive now turned the bass to 0 and loudness off on the ouverture as there is no need for it so the life of the 6000s should be easier now, will upload pictures later this week or maybe next week.

    Thanks for your help everyone!Smile

Re: Suitable subwoofer for use with Beolab 6000

Unfortunately, i've returned the subwoofer as although it was great looking and sounded good, it had a buzzing noise all the time it was on using both rca and when using the high level in through my non b&o hifi the buzzing was worse, so i've decided to invest the money into new frets for the 6000s, a wall bracket for the beo4 remote and maybe a wall bracket for the ouverture.

Once i get some more money i may consider the new pv1 thats coming out soon or maybe a beolab 2 if  the price is right.

Thanks for your help though guys.
