Well it's not so much about the part itself, but it's actually very difficult to make it properly centered and precisely square to the worm screw. My pulley, taken from a 4002, is slightly wobbly.

I had a go and it seems that it wasnt the motor but the belt. When i removed the top panels i notided lots of green rubber everywhere and a very worn belt.

I replaced it with a band i had that was the same size(with much more tension) and it is now running like a dream.

Do you think it is still worth stripping the motor?

Also, do i need a specialist belt for this or will the rubber band i used work long term?

Was interesting having a look inside. although it took a while to get all the panels back in place neatly.

Hmmm personally I would be a bit skeptical. If you ask me I would bet that is the motor making the noise and perhaps by adding a bit of tension (you can see that the original was loose) this has temporarily resolved the issue. It is up to you really. See how it runs without the belt if it is relatively quiet then I guess it could be left.

I personally strip all motors now if nothing else it might just extend their life and definately makes them run sweater, however it is a fidely job, you have to watch the brushes and that tiny circlip and the washers!

Belt kits can be sourced from Dillen (Martin).

Just out of interest, when you spin the shaft with your fingers (no belt attached) how long does the motor spin for? Should be a good few seconds!

Ill have to have a check to see how it spins and get back to you. I think the belt was slipping making the noise. It also explained why it ran smoothly sometimes as this was when it wasnt slipping.

I think i may still strip it down though as it must be getting on and i have all the equipment ready.

Are there any other motors that would benefit from a strip down?

Like Olly, I doubt the belt alone could be responsible for the rattle.

What is that green stuff you saw inside? Was the belt green?

Looks like somebody 'fixed' the deck with an old office rubber band!

There are two types of ac motor found in the 4000 (I am not aware of more) one of them I think can be pulled apart the other cannot without drilling even then I am I wouldn't risk it. Either way you can get oil to both top and bottom bearings which is the major issue with the servo motor - you can't really access either bearing, one is completely covered while the other is effectively covered by a washer. smaller motor benefit much more anyway.

With the platter motors I tend to apply oil to both ends and run for a while just make sure non gets anywhere near the belt path.

I missed thate Jacques yeah must admit many moons ago I tried a rubber band I was desperate though and it never worked of course! I think they are designed to decompose fairly rapidly but not sure if they go all gooey!

Sorry i should have been clearer, the green all over the insidde was bits of the decayed band. Ive attached a pic of what it was like, although i had removed the green bits by then.

Is it easy to get replacement belts locally or should i enquire via this site?
