    Changing belts on Beocord 5000 (4705, 4715) - part 1

Now we are going to disassemble the Beocord 5000 (continuing with actual belt replacement in part 2).

Here we have the patient. We start by turning it upside down (disconnecting from mains first, naturally).

First remove the wooden outer cover (4 highlighted screws), and then unscrew the single hightlighted screw on back of the Beocord - but only as far as it turns easily, do not remove it completely! (It keeps the black plastic mask cover in place). Under the wooden cover You find five more screws, three on the front edge and one on each side. Remove these as well (they secure the keyboard assembly).  You can as well loosen the two larger screws in the middle front of the bottom plate so that they can later be slide thru their slots - they hold the cassette mechanism in position.

Then turn the unit over and remove the black mask cover by lifting it from upper corners, moving a bit up freeing the flaps under the keyboard, and finally removing the springs which are attached to the upper corners of the cover (leave the other ends of the springs as they are). The result should look like this:

Now (if You removed the 5 screws under the wooden cover in the first step from underneath) the keyboard assembly can be carefully folded up and forward, but remember to take out the tape counter belt which runs on the right side between the keyboard assembly and the cassette mechanism!

The highlighted three screws hold the PCB:s in place: two on the main one and one on smaller board. Remove these and the boards can be lifted up on side supports for service position.

Finally release the cassette mechanism from the chassis: lift the highlighted arm free from the recording solenoid pin (in front of the mechanism) and take off the highlighted tapehead wire connector, then slide the mechanism a bit forward so that the bottom screws can slide thru their slots (if You didn't loosen the bottom screws in step 1 do it now!)

Now we are ready to continue to part 2...

When reassembling pay attention to correct positioning of the keyboard assembly (remembering the tape counter belt as well!), it needs a bit of wiggling to sit on neatly.

    chartz:

    Oui.

I've been moderately interested in adding a BC2200 or BC5000 to my BM4000/BG4002/BV M70 main system.  But since I already have 4 cassette decks I don't use, it hasn't been a high priority.

But every so often I'll see a piece that hasn't had a bid on it yet, so I'll put a small bid on and forget about it.  Once in awhile, I win those bids.

About two months ago I tried getting a new platter for my second BG RX 2.  I didn't want to spend more than about $30 with shipping, and I kept getting outbid.  But then I won a whole lot of RX 2 parts, including a near mint platter, for $1, just because I put a small bid on an auction that had no bidders.

Well, this BC5000 had an opening bid of $0.99, so I put a small bid on it for the heck of it.  I didn't expect to win it, actually.  In fact, it looks like two different people tried to "snipe" it last minute.  If they had only gone $1 more, it would be theirs!

Looks like I have a daunting task ahead of me.  But I have no other projects currently underway, so what the heck?

    Current primary listening:  SMMC20EN -> BG4002 -> BM4000 -> Beovox M70

How about sharing our progress when we both start this common project?

Since Jari is well ahead of us, this thread will be very interesting. This is a real challenge, and I'm sure that Tim Jarman will be glad to help!

Got my deck today.  Waiting on belts.

One doesn't fully appreciate the size until it's in one's hands!  (Of course, it's probably tiny next to the Beomaster 8000....)

Indeed! It's about the size of a contemporary Beogram!

Good to see it got safely to your place... Let the game begin!

I've received an original service manual, in French language, brand new. It is fantastically precise!

I have the necessary (nay, compulsory) dynamometres, an oscilloscope and the belts should arrive soon. I will try to find an alternative method to Jari's but I doubt it will be feasible that easily...

Thanks to Martin, my belts are in!  Going off to celebrate my wife's birthday tonight, but tomorrow she has to work, and the kids will be going to day care.  Looks like tomorrow I'll begin work on my BC 5000 Type 4716!

    Hi,

Glad to know Martin's kit has arrived!

I'll probably get them tomorrow then.

My biggest problem is the spool motor. It yells and nothing will do. I'll need a new one. I can hear fine music, no tape eating, but the PPM doesn't light on one channel. All lights are functional.

Oh and the caps need to be changed (the usual red ROE).

By the way, I'd never seen such huge flywheels, even on Revox machines, let alone on Nakamichis!

    Going to bed.

    Hi Jari!

Are you sure the loom linking PC1 to PC2 actually goes where you have it pictured? Doesn't it fool the phones volume wheel?

Silly me, I don't remember where it was!Super Angry

Well, my pictures were taken when I put the machine back together so the cables etc. may be a bit out of place, I can't remember which cable runs I adjusted before or after each picture..

Actually, on this one I think it was tied up with the two other cables on the left (to clear it out of the way perhaps ??) ? Does this sound reasonable ?

Oh dear, I just dont want to open the beast up again to look where I've put it [:'(]

    Hi!

The question is: where do the wiring loom sit on the left?

Does my photo show the correct path?

As you can see, my wires are slightly different.  There were also physical differences in my broken board from the replacement Jeff sent me.

    Re: Changing belts on Beocord 5000 (4705, 4715) - part 1

    Hi,

I have just received Jeff's parts, couldn't wait! Thanks Jeff! Smile

Anyway, the PPM now works, as well as the output/rec amp, courtesy of the new MC1437P (actually a double uA709). The spool motor, however, wasn't much better than mine, lubrication being close to zero!

I had a hard time figuring how to put the lid spring back. Super Angry You have to have the deck in service position because you need to pull the right holder out completely (part n°43, page 4.2) to be able to fit it correctly. It is otherwise impossible.

Now playing Never For Ever on my main system. Superb! Now I just need one in mint condition...Super Angry
