Beomaster 1700 roasting with connecting Beovox s4500

    Hi guys,

Just connected my perfect conditioned Beovox S4500 (type 6318) speakers to my Beomaster 1700 and it was almost immediatly roasted. Tried the other outputs on my previous speakers and after an hour or two these also burned through. Turned out that the machine was full of dust.

My enthousiasm about B&O and audio just started so I have no idea of what to do.. Any suggestions?

    Thanks !

Re: Beomaster 1700 roasting with connecting Beovox s4500

There are only 2 channels, one left and one right.
The left channel goes to two speaker sockets at the rear, the right channel to two other sockets.
If one pair goes silent, the other pairs goes too as they are paralleled.

What do you mean by "roasted" ?

    Hi Martin,
    thanks for you reply.

Your right, first 2 of the 4 sockets were still working, which later stopped aswel. With roasted I ment that a small plume of smoke came out of the back ..

Re: Beomaster 1700 roasting with connecting Beovox s4500

Can you spot any burned components ?
In the amplifier and/or power supply ?
Are you using correct speaker plugs ? Some owners use bare wires stuck into the
speaker sockets and that is asking for trouble since the bare leads can easily short and that WILL blow the amplifier.

I used the right plugs and the power supply is still working. When I tried f the headphone output I only heared a zoom and again smoke was produced. By opening I saw smoke coming from plug R214 on picture 1.

On picture 2 you can see that the electrolytic capacitors also look like they need replacement ..

Re: Beomaster 1700 roasting with connecting Beovox s4500

OK, roasted seems to be an appropriate word.
Looks like a shorted output capacitor and with it, a blown output stage.
I will be happy to check if I have a rebuilt amplifier module in the dungeons if you like, in my opinion it
would make sense to replace the whole module rather than attempting a (costlier) repair.

You should check your speakers now (on another amplifier).

That would be great! I'm also checking online (in The Netherlands) if I can find anything.

Maybe i'm making a mistake with connecting them, because I tried them on my older pioneer SA-6200 and there was a very low noisy outcome when I tested one of the speakers. I also noticed some strange smells.

(with my beomaster I used a contra version of the din plug to connect the speakers)

Is it me, the pic, or???

Do you have both (L+R) speakers terminated to the same common DIN plug?

    ++++EDIT++++

Looked again, it appears to be: NO.

Split one single lead rather than doubling up as you have -and that rat's nest looks like there may be some shorting between terminals.

You must be sure that the wires are not touching. Magic smoke is almost certain to appear if doing so Whistle

that might have been the problem than.. however as you can see on the pic, that's quit hard with these plugs..

Re: Beomaster 1700 roasting with connecting Beovox s4500

Certainly the plugs can be tight -even when wired properly.

But, based on your pic -you have twice as much wire headed into the terminals as required.

    1.) Pull them apart.

2.) Take a razor and give a small slice to the insulation between the two leads on one.

3.) Give a slight tug to separate them about ~10mm.

Now you will have -/+ on just one lead -halving the amount of wire you are trying to jam in there.

    You now have:

        L              R

    -      +       -      +

    ||    ||       ||     ||

    You want to have:

    L       R

    - +    - +

     Y       Y

Re: Beomaster 1700 roasting with connecting Beovox s4500

The most important thing is to keep those terminals separate!

You basically introduced a loop to the output and it can (apparently already has) fry whatever they touch.

This correction will prevent this in the future, but will not "fix" what has already been fried.

    Also, for reference...

    The "blade/spade" is negative (-)

    The "pin" is positive (+)

    Hi Martin !

About to buy a beomaster 1600 to replace the module. According to beocentral this contains the same amp apart from the tuner.
    Or not ?

Re: Beomaster 1700 roasting with connecting Beovox s4500

There are two (very) different Beomaster 1600 models, the one that looks like your 1700 (only with black
alu rails) has the same amplifier. Make sure that it has its old capacitors replaced so you won't end up sitting
with just one more module with leaking capacitors etc.

    Hi Martin (and others),

I bought a Beomaster 2300 to replace my 1700. But, i'm now facing a new problem: it has a 7 din phono connector instead of a 5 din. How to connect it with Beogram 1902? (without using the tape)

    O man, what a hassle !

    Thanks !

Re: Beomaster 1700 roasting with connecting Beovox s4500

The Beogram 1902 has a 5-pin DIN plug and the Beomaster 2300 has a 7-pin DIN socket. The extra two pins are used by Datalink compatible products, the Beogram should work just fine with the 2300.
