Beogram 8002 to Beomaster 6500: Datalink Compatibility?

    Hello Forum

This is my first post ;-)

I have a Beomaster 6500 Line with CD and Tape. Lately i had the chance to buy a very nice Beogram 8002 with MMC1 and recapped it (thanks to Dillen), everything works fine basically. My problem is the datalink. I made a cable and wired up Pin 6 and 7 between my Beomaster 6500 and the 8002, but nothing happens. A quick test with a Beogram 7000 and the 6500 worked fine, so it must be my cabling or the 8002 itself. Are the 8002 and the Beomaster 6500 compatible datalink-wise? Should i made a straight or crossed connection of Pin 6 and 7 between the systems?

Another question regarding the 8002: when playing a very silent passage, i can hear the tonearm movement. Not very strong audible, but still it is there. I regreased the screw spindle, but no effect. Any help? In my 8002, the tonearm movement is not continously but intermediate, is that normal?

Thanks and best regards from Switzerland, Patrik

Re: Beogram 8002 to Beomaster 6500: Datalink Compatibility?

Just tested and sorry, they seem to be not compatible. At least my Beogram 6002 doesn't recognise commands from Beomaster 5000 (with 7 pin cable), which is similar set-up to Yours. So, I assume the 6000/8000 series Beograms just don't work with 5000/5500/6500/7000 Beomaster.

Record decks with built in RIAA pre amp have datalink on pin 7 and decks without RIAA pre amps (such as BG8002) have datalink on pin 6.

The Beomaster 6500 will expect a deck with datalink on pin 7 indicating built in RIAA pre amp.

Your record deck and Beomaster 6500 are incompatible, and you will require a stand alone RIAA pre amp between the two units unless your Beomaster has RIAA pre amp built in as an accessory (very uncommon but do exist!)

OK, but in that case my BG6002 - BM5000 combo should work ?

Well, my Beogram 6002 is a recent buy so haven't had time to check if it has the datalink  module inside (it is optional in this model, I believe). You cannot tell that from outside, I suppose ?

I agree, it should work in theory, unless the type of datalink is different. I don't recall anyone stating that they are different but I could be wrong.

According to service manual, type number 564x has datalink and type number 565x does not.

Looks like if you have a 7 pin Din socket then you should have datalink. If you have 2 phono sockets then you don't have datalink.

My Beomaster 5500 has worked fine with datalink on two Beogram 8002's and an 8000. It is right that the 6500 and other newer audiomasters have Datalink on the different pin than the old standard.

Re: Beogram 8002 to Beomaster 6500: Datalink Compatibility?

    Hello Graham

Thanks for your reply, i made the datalink working now!

In my post, i forgot to mention that i have an external RIAA preamp, so it worked fine for the audio part, i just could not make the datalink functionality working between my BM6500 and the BG8002.

I now connected pin 6 of the BG8002 to pin 7 of the BM6500, and voila, it's working now (basically). There seems to be an incompatibility of the << / >> command: The tonearm always moves backward in slow motion, independent of which direction i pressed on my Beolink 1000 remote. Also the TURN button of the remote does not work, but who wants the player to start turning by remote anyway?

The other functions work as following with my Beolink 1000 remote: Pressing PHONO starts the player, multiple pressings of PHONO starts the repeating function, up to 9 times repeating the record. Pressing STOP once lifts the needle, pressing twice and the needle moves to its resting position and it the Player stops. Pressing PLAY starts playing, but without the repeating functionality as when pressing PHONO. Pressing PLAY while the record is already playing makes the tonearm move to the beginning of the record and starting playing from there again.

Thanks to the forum for the replys! Patrik

The only thing I can ad is that a Beocord 5500 works perfectly with a BM6000 (80's) even with the 2035 remote.
