Are there any worthwhile software updates for this?

You don't say what software revision your Beovision 7-40 is currently, but the most recent update which was release in April 2011 provides the following fixes:-

Blu-ray playability (Corrections introduced for Blu-ray player)

    • Cannot play “Inglorious Basterds”
    • Cannot play "OSS 177"
    • Cannot play Robin Hood Blu-ray when Ethernet is connected
    • Problems with playing Disney Blu-ray and DVD (different titles)
    • Replay of “Avatar” may give a warning message about software update
    • Audio interference when playing Toy Story 2 and Lords of the Rings Trilogy
    • Intermittent picture freeze seen on Sherlock Holmes and Toy Story
    • Intermittent no Sound from Blu-ray at start-up.

    Regards Keith....

And the BR-player can be updated by simply hooking it up your broadband connection (or by disc). So your dealer can sort this out rather quickly.

To the DIY gang at BeoWorld: updating the BR player will initiate a service ticket/note that will be sent to the dealer you bought it from.

Thanks for all the info.  The thing is my dealer tells me that the strong advice from HQ is that you should only have updates installed to fix an existing problem

    Is this normal policy?

Yes, this is what my dealer insisted, too. Well, less "insisted" and more like "we can get an engineer out to you in 48 hours, so why other using the CD?". An engineer came around and did a full BV7 sw update, including the Blu-ray drive. My TV was updated to sw 10.x at the same time. Good news.

Yes indeed.  My dealer basically says he will not come round until there is a specific problem to fix, so I'm a bit confused now
