I was thinking of these, because they have solder lugs, and appear to be of reasonable quality.

The dimensions are spot-on at 40X80 mm for the Beomaster 8000.

Any thoughts please?

Hi Jacques, I think you need a higher voltage tbh as there is not a great deal of headroom considering the amount of work these caps might be expected to do!

I went for Panansonic 80V jobs rated near the 8A ripple rating of the originals. Not 'audio grade' but decent enough quality IMO!

Still got to get royund to installing them I am rather behind with jobs atm!

Yes that was my condition: a perfect and professional fit. No fiddling with spacers etc.

The manual stated 63V and it should be fine nonetheless, considering the old ones have some life left in them!

And today's quality caps are better too, aren't they?

I have no doubt they are better as the chemestry involved has come on a lot since then!

I guess you are right about the voltage limits, although I know Martin advises a higher voltage rating in this instance - Although I do not like to speak on behalf of him so wait till he pops along :)

My caps are shorter but the correct diameter, so spacing will not be visible and not much of a hastle to add some form of packing!

Also, I hate those fashionable cheapo snap-in capacitors. I want real connections, hence the lugs!

So what did you B&O buffs choose for your Beomasters then?

It seems to me (but I may be fooled by appearances) that those smaller, lighter caps are of inferior quality, whatever brand they carry. I have always thought the heavier the better as far as PSU reservoir caps are concerned. Well, that's what my teachers told me 30 years ago!

The problem is that I couldn't source any good 80V elecrolytics that will fit; they are always larger in diametre. And the smaller ones I had between my hands are soo light! They seem empty! And those tiny solder posts just don't inspire me at all...

 

 

Nothing exotic Jacques, like I said mine are panasonics 80V ~8A 85C (I am happy this area remains relatively cool in the 6000 & 8000) rated and yes they have the puny connectors but as you said there is little choice unless you are willing to pay a lot of money! I have not tested mine extensively as yet, but I will be doing so in a 6000 LED that is awaiting a rebuild.

Whenever I find myself pondering over different makes or series of power supply filter caps, I take a look at the wiring gauges used throughout, and fall back to not caring

But you're right about the minuscule board tracks or wires generally used in most amplifiers. Sometimes, even (?) in "audiophile" amps, there are mega-thick wires with huge reservoirs in the PSU and ultra thin and narrow PCB tracks. But hey, they are gold plated, hence justifying their enormous price-tag!
