Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
I am wondering if the moving of the arm should be completely noise free? Would it need lubrication perhaps?
Also I wonder if the tone arm should be completely fixed (not sliding from side to side), and how to fix that, if it shouldn't.

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
My newly lubricated 4000 does small ticking noises sometimes, a little more frequent than my two Beogram 4002's. I think that it is pretty normal.
When lowered, the arm should move in accordance to the record to track the groove. Imagine if the arm wouldn't move with the horizontal movements of a slightly off-centered groove, That will almost certainly cause the stylus to skate across the record.
In the tone arm assembly, there is a light sensitive sensor which ensures that the arm moves in parallel relation to the record.

Thanks Søren. I guess I won't have to worry about that then :-)

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
If I run my 4000 without a record it is whisper quiet, and should be as far as I am aware! Only thing you hear (without looking for noises) is the speed change relay and the start stop micro switches.
My 400x's with plastic servo motors are a different matter though! I can hear them clearly!
Some early 400x's have the better built metal servo motor so it would be interesting to compare these!

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
Aha. Then I guess I should lubricate something. I saw a picture on the forum about which places to lubricate. I am however not sure how to remove the old lubrication and which lubrication should be used when re-lubricating. But the 4000 is truly a magnificent piece of hardware! I hope I can get mine up and running 100 %. Otherwise I have been offered one for approx. 100 £ which is supposed to have been serviced four years ago. Maybe I should buy it, though I would have to drive 2-3 hours to get it. It includes the B&O MMC20EN cartridge in good condition.

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
Hello,
I have a Beogram 4002 and a 4000 none of them has a silent carriage motor when the arm moves fast! The 4002 has a 'plastic' motor (in fact the casing) but not the 4000.
Ditto my Beogram 8000, although it is quieter than those two.
I thought filip was asking about that.
Of course they can't be heard when playing a record!

Yes, the carriage servo should be audible when moving in << or >> mode

It should, actually! It is driven by a worm screw, unlike the Pioneer PL-L decks whose arms are free to move.
What you shouldn't do is to force it to move by hand, oh no!

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
Argh - so what do I need to tighten? It looked a little loose that's why I tried to see if it was fixed. Of course by now I'm an expert in opening the damn thing ;-)
Would the information from the 4002 service manual - 4.4 horizontal placement - also apply to the 4000?

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
The arm assembly which is driven forward by the spindle should be tight as a screw with a bolt on, but the tonearm itself should be movable in it's nature. The sensor arm is fastened to the assembly and shouldn't bugde
4.4 in my 4002 service manual is about adjusting the CD4 decoder, looks like your manual is for the older type 5501/2/3?

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
Stop a minut, are we talking about the tone arm carriage, or the tone arm where it is attached to the carriage, the carriage should not have any play or feel lose.
The tone arm must move freely when in play position, the needle follows the record groove and when moving inward, it will open for light to the photo optic, this will activate the motor and the carriage will move to parallel position, this happens in very small movements.

I am talking about the actual tone arm; not the carriage.

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
Thanks - it does move more than a few mms though. But I guess it's okay. I'm still waiting for the sensor bulb to arrive before I can actually hear what it sounds like. In the meantime I have bought a second copy which I will be getting in the weekend.

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
So you bought the 4000 that was on dba.dk at 900 DKK?

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
Right!
Of course the tonearm should move if we're talking about that! When not lowered it should resist a little, or rub, because it sits in a V-shaped support. Once lowered though, it is perfectly free to move!
I'd say 5 degrees or so, you can actually push it till it touches the sensor arm!

That's right. It comes with the MMC20EN pickup - so I guess for that alone it's interesting. Do you think it's a bad buy?

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
I can't resist a good deal though I don't actually have space for it, e.g. I currently have a Beomaster 2000 and a Beogram 1800 (without cartridge) up for sale if anybody is interested. They both look very nice.

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
How should it be audible Soren? I guess though it depends how you define audible doesn't it! I must have an exceptional 4000 & 8000 or maybe it is the method I use to clean 'em up
All the plastic motor cariage servos I have are noiser than the metal ones, some to a greater extent than others!

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
I wanna know too!
But seriously, every brushed DC motor I've come across was noisy. Not a matter of lubrication, just rubbing and a little arcing... that's why they are always double-shielded on Beocords for example!
The one in the later 4002/4 series is a superb swiss made motor, but the deck is resonant and they will never get silent!

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
The ticking noise is when I move the carriage fast, it is not with any regularity but about 3-4 ticks if the carriage is being moved from "park" position to the center and back again if the machine is cold.
The spindle was lubricated with acid free oil (sewing machine oil), following descriptions from the Service manual and from here.
My two 8002's, the 8000 and my Father's 8002 and 4004 doesn't do the ticking noise

Re: Beogram 4000 arm motor noise
I never said silent Jaqces, I said whisper quiet which is different Of course if I listen I can hear the motor but it really is very quiet. I can hear the clicking of the carriage switches (despite not being micro switches) but of course in an absolutely silent room I might hear it more.
I will have to compare my 8000 with the 4000 so I will report back later!
For the worm I actually use a very light grease formulated especially for worm screws. I use sewing oil for other areas and a mix of the previous and teflon on the main bearing (sewing oil for bronze bearing and teflon at bottom with the thrusty bit. I figured lubricats have come on since 1972 and the above regeime seems to work well!
Only thing I am not sure about is the damper. I am not convinced sewing oil is the right stuff long term but as there are no complaints as yet it seems to be the most practical answer!
I thought about mineral hydraulic oil as used in Citroens hydroneumatic suspension but not sure if that would not absorb moisture and cause other problems...?
