    Beolab 9 v Beolab 8000 + 2 subs

There have been a lot of threads about Beolab 9 v Beolab 8000 + Beolab 2, but has anyone tried Beolab 9 v beolab 8000 + 2 Beolab 2s? It appears to be more economical to put the latter together on the used market but will it sound as good as Beolab 9?

    Re: Beolab 9 v Beolab 8000 + 2 subs

About 1 year ago I did need some replacement for my Beolab Penta 3. I did try Beolab 8000 + sub and Beolab 4000 + sub. I did end up with Beolab 9, - they are much better with a lot of power and you dont need the sub. By the way the Beolab 4000 + sub sounded better than Beolab 8000 + sub., but dont have the power of Beolab 9. I am using Beolab 9 together with Beosound 4 - mk. II and it is just great.

    ...........go for Beolab 9.

This is mostly an ALT v. non-ALT issue from my standpoint.

There is scarcely anything in this world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey. - John Ruskin

    Re: Beolab 9 v Beolab 8000 + 2 subs

It's not just the difference in ALT vs non-ALT.

The BeoLab 9 bass enclosure is sealed.

The BeoLab 2 uses passive radiators, and BeoLab 8000s are ported.

The BeoLab 9 uses completely different crossover points.

The cabinet designs are completely different and constructed out of completely different materials.

The BeoLab 9 actually has higher Q until you reach the frequency range of the ALT because of the larger drivers.

The electronics & power supplies are completely different.

The sound of the top end is obviously completely different because of the ALT, but there are other very substantial differences between the two setups...

    Re: Beolab 9 v Beolab 8000 + 2 subs

I'm with Alex - the BL9 was designed from the ground up to be a full range speaker. I think the BL2 was designed to give rumbles and explosions in a 5.1 system. Matching a sub to separate speakers isn't the same as having the amps, crossovers, drivers and cabinets selected & designed to perform well together - give me the BL9's every time!

Generally speaking, you aren't learning much if your lips are moving.

I kinda knew that but they are really hard to come by. I've only ever seen 2 at that price point.  I think £3,600 would be idealBig Smile.

    Re: Beolab 9 v Beolab 8000 + 2 subs

I owned the BL8002 + BL2 for nearly 4 month and traded both for a pair of new BL9. So I think, I`m able to compare both.

To make a long story short. You can not compare both. More music (BL8000 + 2 BL2) is not "better" music. If the BL9 is 100%, I would rate the BL8000 + BL2 combo not more than 60-65%.

    Re: Beolab 9 v Beolab 8000 + 2 subs

I tend to agree with most of the foregoing here.

    I have a BL2/BL8k combo in my bedroom. . it's nice.. . it's not BL9s though.

Not in the same category as far as I'm concerned. . The 9s (to me) are the tightest

speakers in the range.  I do have 5s as well. . (they incredible) but I prefer the 9s from

    a strictly musical quality standpoint. . .

I say get the 9s if you can get them.  They're hard to beat!

I'm ready for something new that I actually want to buy!

I was reading this thread and noticed you are from Arkansas.  I'm wondering if you are the only B&O owner in that state?  Big Smile

    @ mimedlo,

you have written, you own the 5s as well, but you prefer the 9s from a strictly musical quality standpoint.

I think, you are one of first guys prefering the 9s befor the 5s.

I did not ask my local dealer to lend my the BL5 for a weekend, because I though they are much better than my pair of BL9. And as a little child, I`d like to get everything I want.

Good to know, my BL9 purchase was the right decision, because everybody told me to save the money for the BL9 and buy instead the BL5 in 1-2 years.

    Re: Beolab 9 v Beolab 8000 2 subs

They're two surprisingly different speakers! They can be compared on a few levels, but I think they're actually quite different characteristically. The BeoLab 9 definitely has a sweeter tonal balance overall, far more coloured than the BeoLab 5, but you could argue much more forgiving and 'musical'. BeoLab 5s are one of the most linear (possibly THE most tonally linear) speakers I have listened to, including studio/mastering monitor systems. The downside is that they can sound really, really bad if you play bad recordings through them!

    Re: Beolab 9 v Beolab 8000 2 subs

    Evan. .

I'd say that's the most logical solution.

And yes. .. I'm holding tight. .the Lab 9s are my preference for strictly music (I.E. The Wall,  Eva Cassidy, etc.)  The 5s are better 'speakers' because they are limitless. . .They can be placed in any environment and dominate.  The 9s are more limited. . .but at 3/4 volume. .I prefer the 9s for strictly stereo music.

If I ever purchase any I'll put them in the master bedroom as stereo speakers. .

    I say buy them both.

Then you'll never have to ask 'what if?'

I'm ready for something new that I actually want to buy!
