    My new toys :)

well I got myself a nice 'little' system last week.... something I had not expected to come across any time soon, not in a way that would be justifiable considering current purse-string woes anyway!

Despite this, with little thought (more automatic Beo-reflex!), I clicked the BIN button, and prepared for a drive to London and back so I could bring home my prize, all hopefully squashed into my '98 Escort, mostly boxed up!

The big day came, and I got to London (eventually), packed everything into the car, including myself and made for the home straight :)

Ten and a half hours later, and oh boy did I pay the price! Over 4 days worth to be exact, pretty bad flu like symptoms followed by stomach cramps and you can probably guess the rest!!!! I think the rather difficult drive took its toll! Good old Nightnurse helped me get some well needed sleep in the end where most of my recovery happened!

So only today have I managed to have a good look, so nothing exciting in the way of pictures I was just too eager to get it all out of the box's!

So what did I get I hear you cry?

Tada!!! I finally got a Beosystem 8000 in me paws Not too bad either, one owner from new, amp and cassette (might I add which is a 9000!) both have box's and all inserts, unfortunately the beogram does not.

The Beogram makes up for lack of box and comes with a nice looking 20CL cartridge that seems ok, but I need to test this, so I am not getting too excited yet! Also included with it's original frequency response certificate and test printout!

All instructions are complete, except for the fact the pages were separated and put into clear plastic wallets. Shame they were cut, although original Beo-staples were present Unsure

What else, There is of course a Beolab terminal. Oh I have the original 12.5khz B&O Azimuth adjust tape, and a cleaning kit within a tape holder. I also have the original test certificate for the Beocord. Seems there might be a cassette missing as there is a gap of about this size in the wallet...?

Last but not least all of this came complete with it's original S80 shelf system which is currently lying unused in the hall!

Now what amazed me is that the Beogram works! The only bad news is neither the cord nor master are currently working. I think the cassette will just need new belts and a general service and recap but the master shows no sign of life so really looking forward to lifting the lid on this to see what makes her tick! A quick check has revealed a blown 4A fuse so no doubt something on the amplifier stage...? Just knowone tell me it's the transformer Sad!

Anyway, will clear my Beomaster 5000 off the bench and hopefully start working on these as soon as :) Might write up on the experience if anyone interested but I have to warn you I am not very good at stopping to take piccies!

Was written in one of my posts last week. Things have changed!Stick out tongue Congratulations on a great system, one of the best B&O ever made. Big Smile

    Re: My new toys :)

Yes Premiumverum I didn't even have such a system in my sights last week but this rare opertunity came along and I didn't think twice! I guess you could say my non expectant wishful thoughts came true :) Not sure how long the fun will last as things are quite tuff at the moment, but maybe I can get rid of some of my other stuff first and she might not notice hey?

My speakers are S120's so about right. The speakers that came with this were only tiny Wharfdale 303's, not much to my liking. These will serve well as testers for unknown amps from now on :)

    Lucky Olly !

I wish you courage to sort out any technical problems that you will probably encounter , however  it's more than sure that you will find much help from the veteran BeoFans - if you need it.

I personally have lived with the Beolab 8000 of the 1980's (in some brochures it was called Beolab 8000 instead of Beosystem 8000 ) since 1981 when I bought it new from Rex Radio in London (with MS150 speakers) up to now.

Have upgraded to Beogram 8002 and Beocord 9000 plus the CDX2, but the Master is still the same - sounding fantastic to me.

You see my ears are aging with the system and have no eyes for any other...

Sometime ago it was necessary to move the MS150 to the garage , as the cones had started disintegrating and I could not find a way to cure them. (In Athens this is so difficult!  oh , yes! In 1983 I moved the whole system in the boot and back seats of a VW K70 and travelled through France , Italy and the then Yugoslavia to Athens where's my home).  I have replaced the speakers with an excellent American favourite of the 1990s : Infinity Renaissance 90 with excellent ribbon drivers and wooden cabinet and they did match the Master perfectly.

Olly , I am usually a reader in this forum , but I could not withstand placing this note when I saw how excited you are with your new  old find ; I can understand this and hope you will enjoy it.

    Re: My new toys :)

Thanks Nicolas and to the others too! Cleared my desk (sort of!) and compiling a belt list for Martin... That Master is big! I will be using every corner of my workbench when I get round to it!

I actually replaced the 4A fuse with a slightly lighter one, and saw magic smoke! I was kind of relieved to see the fuse survive which suggests it is not a transformer fault. The original had failed quite abruptly and I was a little worried!

I think this might have come from Rankhi fi originally but I cannot be sure. There is a reciept for an older system somewhere which includes a Beocord 5000 and master 2200, including the instructions for the former and diagram for the latter! Clearly this guy liked his B&O! Also found a second calibration chart for a Beocord 9000! I wonder what happened to that? Probably parts donor or worse!

Looks great Olly! I must admit I was tempted by this one myself!

Didn't it come with some old non-B&O speakers? (if it's the ad I saw!)

    Re: My new toys :)

Hi Llewelyn yes it did, some tiny wharfdale 303's. Sound a little harsh compared to my Beovox 1802's (I really like these despite lack of bass) so they will be my testing speakers.

BTW how are you with continuing where we left off mate? I will try to ring you over next couple days!

well I might not be keeping it yet, as I cannot really justify the cost if truth be told, despite this I couldn't resist it though! You might get a chance! TBH this is the first time I have got there before anyone else on ebay, things seem to go very quickly on good BINS (I mean within minutes normally!) so I didn't think about this too long!

    Re: My new toys :)

So a quick update, I got the Beogram onto my workbench and decided she would be the first to come apart :) Nothing wrong so much as the fact I have wanted to look inside this series for a long time so didn't hold back! Also need to look at some of the capacitors as these will be replaced.

There is actually a small fault in that the muting isn't working on the right hand channel but this is a no-brainer - will clean the relay contacts as it is obviously not grounding the signal properly.

Quite interesting inside, my jaw dropped at the simplicity and sparsity compared to it's predecessors! Not in a bad way IMO. Where the 400x had been completely over engineered I feel this model is a nice compromise of materials and engineering.

The motor is hmm, not really there! I mean, I have not seen this particular design myself and would like to know how all the fields interact within the drum walls! Amazingly simple design but obviously works very well!

The solenoid system is also simpler but IMO more elegant, and it isn't going to get gummed up like previous offerings!

Serviceability is nice and easy, I had the sled system foff relatively quickly for a clean and relube, although I wouldn't dare strip it as far as I would with earlier models. Of course, there should be no need to do so! Main board is typical B&O access in a way that you only suss out after running the gauntlet with other models a good few times! Nice and simple when you know and IMO a sign that the designers liked to think outside the box :)

I love operational touches such as the slow down of the arm as it approaches the start of record, and the return of the arm to safety when in pause mode, although I suspect this is done a tad too early for stage effect and little else!

All in all, a really nice deck!

And did I have enough confidence in this deck to try the CL? Of course I did! Put on one of my favourite classical pieces (yeah I do listen to the old time stuff occasionally!) - Rhapsody in Blue. No problems to report there! I have not road tested properly but it seems to be free of distortion and tracks perfectly as you would expect! I thought I heard more definition in the glocks(?) (the things that make that hollow wooded sound) at the beginning of the piece, but will hold judgement until later. I am going to buy a new record for this cart though, and it will definitely be up for sale (the cartridge) so I can't enjoy it too much :(. Anyone think KidA is good to test these carts? Not my favorite album but I think it would really test your system to the limits!

Belts ordered for the Beocord, and the amp will be coming upstairs hopefully soon! Not got enough room though and too many other things to do at the same time!

    That's all for now!

    Olly.

    Re: My new toys :)

Will be free of internet between now and Friday as we have decided to go away to parents for a quick Easter break - but I promise when I get back I will haul this beast upstairs and report back (maybe start a workbench thread on it :) ) Will hopefully have belts off Martin too so the 9000 won't be far behind!
