    Beovision AV 9000 problem(s) - Need help!

    Good evening! Smile

A few weeks ago I bought myself a Beovision AV 9000. I bought it with a fault described as, that the sound only was high frequencies, there was no bass. The reason for the sale was, that they didn't had the time to repair it, and that the AV9000 then filled to much, when they couldn't use it, so they just had to get rid of it. The first thing I did when I came home, was to take the fret of. BINGO, someone had kicked to the woofer and damaged the voice coile and the membrane.

The Beovision AV 9000 was not the most mint AV 9000, so it needed and still needs a bit work. So far I have cleaned the TV, changed the speaker cloth and and polished some scratches in the rear part away. I still need to fit the glass panels on the VX7000 (As I pulled out in the fret, the left piece of glass fell into my hand, so I decided to take the other of glass of too, because I didn't wanted to risk, that it also should fall of and then brake) and then I'm going to refurbish the metal plate.

From the point of view, that I only gave 100 DKK (11,25£ or 13,41€) for the Beovision AV 9000, do I think, that it was a fair deal! Stick out tongue

So far, so good! Big Smile

The TV worked fine for a few days after I got it... But... One morning while I was sitting and watching TV did I notice, that the picture begun to get fuzzy! I continued watching, and after about half an hour, was the picture so fuzzy, that it almost was impossible to see anything! My father and I took the rear part of the TV, and tried adjust focus. The picture got sharp again, but my father had to turn the potmeter completely to the one side, which was a bit strange, as the TV was working perfect the day before! We readjusted the potmeter and then closed the TV again. The next few days the TV just stood disconnected from the mains.

Then I thought, that it could be fun, to try and turn the TV on, to see, how it looked. I turned it on, skipped 2 channels when the picture out of the blue got sharp again! I left the TV on to see, if the fault was disappeared. It worked fine for some hours, and I also think, that it worked until next day, where it then got fuzzy again, but not quite as fast this time. The same thing happened again, it got whole fuzzy, and then it got sharp again. All this happened one more time, which maked it 3 times. Now it worked a bit longer, but then it started again... The picture slowly got fuzzy again, but much slower this time, and while I'm writing this, is it still fuzzy.

Today I spent the most of my day with searching on the internet after information on, what the fault could be caused by, but I didn't found anything useful (And I know, that Beovision AV 9000's has identical main boards to them in the Beovision MX 6000's, but I didn't found any useful information neither as I searched with "MX 6000") so now I don't know were to look and search anymore... but then it's good , that I always can ask on the fantastic site: Beoworld! Yes - thumbs up

While the AV 9000 has been running have I noticed, or has there appeared more faults, which I then have noticed, and all the faults I noticed are:

*The picture gets fuzzy, and then sharp and so on, so in a way it's unstable (Maybe it's the high voltage that's unstable, but I just don't know, what's making it unstable...?) (1)

    *The picture bends inwards. (2)

*The picture is jagged in the sides. (3)

*In the top and in the left side of the picture are there some colored lines, where the one in the top is the most visible. (4)

*There often appears a white dot in the top of the picture, but it's different how visible it is. (5)

I don't know if all the faults are caused by the same component, or if the faults are caused by a component each, but the fuzzy picture was the first one to appear, and as far as I remember did the other faults appear at the same time, so the fuzzy picture is the first one to solve!

I have attached some pictures of the faults (The faults and the pictures are numbered!):

    (1)

    (1)

    (2)

    (3)

    (4)

     (5)

Does anyone have an idea about, what could be wrong?

I hope you can help me with this fantastic piece of Bang & Olufsen!

    Best regards

By the way, IPaul (Dutch member) has lots of experience working on these types of TV's. Sort of a whizzkid Smile Maybe he can help answering your questions.

    Hi Leslie Smile

It's only the woofer I need, the tweeter works fine.

Here you see the damaged woofer:

My woofer is completely dead, so how much do you want for your woofer (Send me a PM)? Smile

Is there no way to have a replacement for this type of woofer?

It really hurts to break up this unit. Maybe Martin Dillen can advise. Martin, help, where are you......

I've just scrapped an AV9000 - it's sat outside in the 'Bin' area at LifeStyle AV.  Blown tube.

If you want the woofer, i'll take it out no problem. PM me.  You can also have any other bits you need - just let me know!

    Hi Leslie

That's okay, and there's no hurry at all, I use my Penta's with the AV 9000, so I don't want you to break it up, if you prefer to keep it in one piece, and I fully understand that, I'm a passionated Bang & Olufsen collecter! Smile It is more ment like, if someone has single a woofer, that's just lying around.

Hope one of the members can help if this woofer can be replaced by another type!

Hi, if Lee can send you the woofer (which looks a lot like an Avant type anyway...if so i'd have some for you also :) ) maybe he can also send you the board at the back of the tube, with the focus potmeter on it.

Btw i'm assuming you're confident enough with tv-electronics to work on it....:).

Most likely your fuzzy screen is caused by a broken/bad focus-unit, ordering new would be the best of course but a donorpart might do for now...:).

Most likely all other picture (or rather: geometry-) problems are a matter of re-adjusting the geometry in the servine menu.

To get there, there are 2 pins on the Av board (with the scarts) close to the scarts, make a short shortcut and the tv will show the service menu.

With the beolink you can select and adjust values, exit (beo4) or tv to store and exit.

I know the tweeters are the same as those found on Avants (oh, and lab 6000/8000, probably others too), so I wouldn't be surprised if this were the case for the bass drivers also!

    Hi Lee,

The red displays in the control center are the same type as the ones in MKIII pentas. There are 4 modules in an AV9000, and 3 per penta display. If you have to scrap another AV9000, then you'd have enough display modules to make a set of Pentas with red displays, if you so desire.

Looks really nice when paired with a Beosound 9000.

Re: Beovision AV 9000 problem(s) - Need help!

Ipaul, I've just finished switching the focus-unit with a never used one about 10 minutes ago, but the fault is still there... I couldn't get a sharp picture on the TV, no matter which position the potmeter was adjusted to. As I suggested before: I think the fault has something to do with the high voltage. There's something wrong with the powersupply I think. Hmm

Ipaul and Llewelyn, I've looked in the servicemanuals for the different TV's (Avant and AV 9000), but the number on my AV 9000 woofer, doesn't match any of the numbers in the Avant servicemanuals, but that doesn't matter, if Lee has a woofer! Smile

Thanks for the offer, Friedmett, but I only bought the AV 9000 because it was so cheap! Else I would have waited till I could get my parents AV 9000! Smile And I'm not giving up that easy, I love Bang & Olufsen equipment especially from the 90's, so I don't mind messing a bit around with it! Smile

Ok, the next step would be to check the +150 V (or so) powersupply to the HT trans, if that is ok the transformer itself might be suspicious..

    Hi again! Smile

I'm thinking about taking the contrast screen off the TV to clean the backside of the screen, but I don't know what to clean it with, in order not to damage the anti-reflex coating - Does anyone know what to clean it with? Smile
