Hello, I have just bought a nice Beogram 4000 which has newer been serviced since it rolled out of the factory in September 1973, the only apparent problem were that the spindle had to be lubricated with some acid free oil. It played perfectly, but now it have a small issue... When "on" is depressed, the arms won't move out by itself. I cue the arms onto the record but immideatly it "runs" back in park position and thereby switch off. This problem simply renders this unit unusable for playing my records, but it is still a nice peice of art!

I would possibly first check the switch panel. Make sure all the alu buttons are located properly with the bronze springs and that the switches work (especially where they are SPDT i.e. forward / back) You need to be a bit more specific with your symptoms first Soren!

What happens when you press on (from standby) exactly...?

Also have you had the thing apart and is there anything you might have upset by mistake?

The service manual is invaluble when diagnosing faults with this beast :) And Martin :) :)

Hehe, after I lubed up the arm stransport spindle, I put the machine together as I would do to any other model of the 4000 series, having done this many times before. I put on a record and played the whole side to watch for errors, it did quite well and returned to "park" position as expected.

Aftewards, I would like to see how the 4000 performed with a 7" single. I put one on the platter with the 45 adaptor on it of course, pushed the "on"  button. The platter began rotating and the lights came on like in normal operation, but the arms wouldn't move over the platter by itself. I tried to force it with the "<" button, and it was willing to move like normal. When I let the "<" button go, the arms would move back into "park" and get into standby. I can not get the needle to drop on the record at all trying to press "v" but won't respond, it just goes into standby. The machine wont go into standby again when I push the "off" button, I have to move the arm assembly with "<". The switches seem to work fine.

I know that this is a quite complicated machine compared to it's younger brethren, though I am armed with a service manual somewhere on my computer
