They are an amazing set!  I saw one in the flesh last week in a friends living room, it was awesome!!  The later sets are hd ready, but are the most expensive and sought after.  They were £12,000 upwards when new, and I saw one sell for £1000 a while back!  Good luck in whatever you get

    Re: BV5

    thanks nicky, i have 2 avants 32" 100htz  and a 28" 50htz.

the 28" is up for sale to help fund it.

it had a new tube in it back in 2007, i had it in storage for 2 years and since the 32" came on the scene the 28" has been in my bedroom and not had much use. i paid B&O of milton keynes £800 for a replacement, that included labour. my son thought it was a slot machine and dropped a coin down the louvred vented back panel where it hit the top of the tube, where i guess it hit a weak spot! hence the new tube, still its still going strong.

£400 ono if anyone is interested. it has a new pro logic module (i had one fitted)

To be honest, I think you may struggle to get that much for a crt now!  I have seen 32" dvd avant sell for less on ebay, but you have to think that £1000 for a £12000 tv is a brilliant saving anyway!!

Getting an Avant sold these days, is similar to giving it away.

The BV5 is an excellent TV. Save the Avant maybe?

    Re: BV5

i would save it but i have no room as i have another avant 32" in my living room. when i get my BV5 the 32" will go in my bedroom.

i might be able to sell it to someone who i know, who may well be happy to pay £300 for it... who knows ill keep you all posted.

i know its going to be a monumental task but im used to challenges![:'(]

    Re: BV5

    Hi guys,

It seems the BV5 has become very popular as second hand, and I am also considering buying one since the prices are reasonable and its a great TV set..

But, buying a plasma that is 8-9 years old, how many years can I expect it to work?

What does it cost to replace the plasma screen when that time has come? Is it a "do-it-yourself" job?

    /Peter

    Re: BV5

hi peter from my knowledge of the BV5 it should in theory have at least 60,000 hours of life before expected failure, and i am also led to believe that when the screen does fail, it will need re-gassing? but please dont quote me on that.

I'm using a BV5 and it's a stunning piece of work, both visually and for its SD picture.

Somwhere on the forum you will find a review by Lee where he confirms he never gets any failures reported back.

I've just added a BC2 for DVD etc on the TV but there are cheaper DVD options (B&O).

The prices for the SD BV5's are amazingly low..... but the picture is very very good so I wouldn't worry about it not being HD unless you like to watch a 42" screen with your face up against it!

(My Avant is now doing service with a relative).

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure. [W C Fields]

    Re: BV5

Yes, I bought a 2003 BV-5 in October last year, after considering what Lee @ Lifestyle had said about them being just about the most reliable set he's come across - along with its superb design, picture quality despite not being HD, 3D etc, super quality sound and it's overall B&O high build quality.

If the life expectancy is bothering you then check out the service counter on any set you are interested in buying. Lee (again) properly explained the service counter info to me very recently and confirmed the set I have was a low-to-low medium use set considering it's now in its 8th year.

My set's reading a few days ago were :-   Standby   -    2691 days

                                                                 Audio     -      105 days

                                                                 Video     -      329 days

                                                       On/Off (x 10)   -       667

Lee kindly calculated that this meant, in my set's case, it's been used for an average 2.7hrs a day over 8 years, meaning that my screen has been in use for about 7,800 hours. As you say, the panels are made to a life expectancy of 60,000.

The sound from these sets are excellent on stand-alone (just like the Avants), but if you hook it up to an audio set up like I have the sound is fabulous I can assure you.

I got a pair of Penta's and a pair of RL60.2s hooked up to mine (Via a Beosystem 7000 connected through A-Aux).I'd thoroughly recommend finding yourself a 'low use' BV-5 - brilliant tv.

    The only thing I'd swop mine for (if i could afford one!) would be a BV-9 - personally I would NOT exchange my BV-5 for a bv10 or a bv-7 or bv-8 either.......only a BV-9 I would consider an upgrade from a BV-5Smile

wow looks like a stunning set up you have there. i will post my set up soon.

the more i see of it the hungrier im getting for one. its nice and reassuring to hear the noise side of it is on par with the avant, you see the avant is a timeless piece of art with function and i love my two to bits, but one will have to go to make way for a BV5. all your help and input is greatly appreciated.

    thanks

    Jason,

Yes, the sound is exactly as good as the Avant because the speakers that were used in the BV-5 are the exact same 40W units the Avant had. So as a stand-alone tv, the sound will be exactly as your Avant (i.e. great sound!)

But I must stress, if you already have B&O speakers, you wanna hook em up to the TV because when listening to all sources like music DVD, films, or even just normal tv broadcasts the overall sound is just transformed into absolutely brilliant. If you have any of the more substantial B&O speakers - such as Pentas, Beolab 1, BL6000, BL8000, Beolab 9 or even Beolab 5's - I'd highly recommend you getting em hooked up to your BV-5. Wink

I agree with you, the only upgrade is only a BV9.
