Well after buying the original record, CD, aniversary edition of DSOTM, the last packs the largest punch by a mile. At least to my ears.

Yes, that's what they're also commenting in the article linked above - the volume has been boosted, but you can also do that using the volume adjuster on your hifi ... and the price one has paid is steep, as there are hundreds of instances of digital clipping on a track, among other things affecting the cymbals.

Re: Name your most dynamic song [H]

The tabled SACD data is questionable!

Firstly there is no question about the potential clipping of the CD data shown in the table and in the waveform display, however the SACD data was redigitised from an SACD player analogue out at a max. level 0f -3dBFS - any potentially clipped sample information has been lost in the re-sampling process! It was then normalised (amplified) to give a max. single amplitude of 0dBFS.

I don't think the two data sets are able to be compared becuase the SACD data is not what was on disc!

I do think the conclusions are correct however, because of the visual difference of the waveform displays, i.e. the CD waveform clearly has had more gain/compression applied to it than the SACD waveform.

Generally speaking, you aren't learning much if your lips are moving.

And Atkinson's tentative suggestion, that this was done to make the SACD sound better than the CD, is also "interesting".

Not too many folk think of brass when they imagine dynamic. This fair bounces and rumbles along. Its quite a test for any set of speakers, for the range of sound and ability to discriminate properly.

This is also what you can do with brass,

This next one has quite a range of sounds - Dance on vaseline - David Byrne & Thievery Corporation

Cast your fate to the wind - Sounds Orchestral version

When a blind man cries - Deep Purple, I think rather predicts the Pink Floyd sound, and not many folk realise it,

As Casdave has mentioned brass, I must insist that you try almost anything on "In the Digital Mood" released by GRP 25 years ago as the 'definitive digital performance' of Glenn Miller's music.  Forced to choose one track as 'dynamic' I'll take "American Patrol".

I hesitate to mention 2 other favorites in this category, but I will brave the flames.  :-)

Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Welcome to the Pleasuredome", and force yourself to let it play untill 2:34 into the track.  BeoLab 5's are suggested.

Don Dorsey, "Bachbusters", track 15 the Toccota and Fugue.

There were several other "Sounds Orchestral" versions of this, in fact this one had the lowest listening count ... why did you pick this particular capture ?

First B&O (1976) was a Beogram 1500 ... latest (2011) change has been to couple the BL11 with the BL6Ks *sounds superb*

The reason I picked out that particular version is that it has the highest resolution, and I prefer this version to the original one by Vince Guaraldi.

I'll add another one or two here,
