Does anybody know BeoLab 9's max SPL?

As B&O is providing less and less technical information, I was wondering if anybody knew the max SPL of BeoLab 9?

We know BeoLab 3 goes up to 94 dB, and BeoLab 5 to 105 dB, but how does BeoLab 9 compare?

    I'm just curious..Big Smile

To be fair, I think this only gives the sensitivity. I'll see if I can find the max sound level when I get home tonight!

The figure 103 seems to ring a bell though!

It's funny how much more info you can get about BeoLab Penta in terms of SPL, distortion rates, S/N ratio for the amp, and none of this is available for the new speakers..

I would assume BL9 to have an SPL around 100 dB, since it fits between BL3 and BL5, but I read somewhere that it didn't go as loud as BL1..Surprise

Input sensitivity isn't the same as maximum SPL.

I don't know what the maximum SPL of these sepakers are...

I think most speakers are enough. The Beolab 5's have close to extreme SPL's.

Re: Does anybody know BeoLab 9's max SPL?

B&O don't tell you the % distortion when measuring their maximum SPLs, and whether it's peak output or continuous output. Continuous output is often at least half the peak output (6dB lower), and most manufacturers measure their maximum SPLs at distortion levels where you wouldn't even want to listen to the speakers, so what's the point?

The other crafty thing manufacturers often do is publish the calculated maximum SPL, as opposed to the real-world measured maximum SPL. I'm not suggesting B&O are doing this, but again, SPLs are a figure to take with a pinch of salt.

What I do know is that both the BeoLab 9 and BeoLab 5 go far louder than you would ever want in a domestic setting, the BeoLab 5 especially. Neither of them are on the same scale as proper PA, but incredibly loud nonetheless. BeoLab 9s really shriek when you turn them up high, so I wouldn't want to get them right to the top of their range anyway, but BeoLab 5s go all the way up and still sound incredible, even when they're pulling back the levels going to the drivers...

I agree with Alex. The Beolab 5s are in a different category to all the other speakers - they just get louder with no distortion - the problem with them is you end up playing them rather louder than you imagine - woe betide the neighbours!

All the other modern speakers shriek as they get to the top of the volume levels. The MS150s did this as well though my M100s do not seem to. The only other speaker that did not seem to shriek that I have tried in the B&O later ranges was the Penta. I did talk to someone at Struer about this and he put it down to the protection circuits which are less strict on the Penta - he intimated that the Penta was more likely to damage drivers at very high volumes than the others but not being an electronics whizz, I would not like to comment!

On a general note, speakers with ABRs seem to be worse at high volumes - Beolab 3s really get messy if you play them too loud though they are wonderful if not stretched.

Re: Does anybody know BeoLab 9's max SPL?

Most every speaker I've owned has a shreik to it except for my BeoLab 5000s. I've gotten pretty high with them, but on some occasions (ultra bright songs) the protection circuits will come in around 76ish on the volume scale. Everything seems to sound very bright after listening to my 5000s for so long.

Recently I did a very critical test of my father's Honda Pilot sound system and it does the opposite! It sounds like it multiplies the high frequencies in the top 4 volume units. The treble absolutely skyrockets from 37-40. Didn't seem to be a switchable setting, very odd.
