    Beomaster 8000 Tuner Trouble!

My 8000 has thus far been pretty stable, here is the first real sticky point. The tuner does not produce audio except for white noise (static). The signal meter appears to be functioning.  The MPX light flashes as if it is recieving signal. With an external, amplified antenna the signal strength is about a '6' on frequencies that there should be a station. Auto-tune appears non-functional.  This is more of a nuisance at  present. I have internet radio, and other things to listen to. I just have a problem with not being 'fully functional'.  Where to start? Do I see a cap kit in my future?">

    Cheers, Brian

    Re: Beomaster 8000 Tuner Trouble!

    A capacitor kit exists but there is another issue that you can check;
In some BM8000's a screw holding the metal bottom plate is too long.
It sits near the front edge, just below the tuner board (near the center
    of the Beomasters front edge).
The screw is metal and grounded throught the bottom plate. It can reach
a copper trace on the underside of the tuner board which often mutes
the tuner and/or makes it sensitive to touching the Beomaster.
Replace with a shorter type or simply remove it altogether.

Thanks, so much, Martin. I'll check to see if that is the culprit. Tuner has worked fine in the past, but it's possible something happened in transit.

No luck. I think my problem is closest to Richtoy's of Sep.2009. Wound up being a faulty U264B on the CPU. A possibility? Unfortunately, I'm scope poor, so I'll probably have to wait to ferret this one out.

    Thanks, Brian.

Is the frequency readout OK ?

Martin, the frequency display does change.  The more I look at it, though, the signal meter does not change and the MPX indicator flickers all the time regardless of the frequency readout. Switching to autotune, the frequency shoots to 108 most of the time.

Check the solder joints at the connectors on the processor board.
Check also the shielded cable that runs from the tuner to the processor board, it's very
short and will easily pull out of the tuner unnoticed when the processor board is
    swung up to service position.

    Re: Beomaster 8000 Tuner Trouble!

Thanks, Martin. Will do. I haven't actually opened the beomaster yet. I've been trying to do the manageable stuff.  Opened up the Beogram to see why the tonearm was sticking occassionaly. Found a piece of heavy plastic tape that had slid down into the way of the track. Also saw that it's in need of a belt, and may as well do the tachodisc, as I'm sure it's original.

    Thanks for the help.
